Effective Planning And Goal Setting

Anyone who has worked with a coach will know how passionate they are about getting their clients planning and goal setting effectively. But if you don’t have a coach to support you to achieve and exceed your goals, there are issues that you should consider

What are the key factors to effective planning and goal setting?

Be prepared : This may sound a strange piece of advice, but if you have a goal in mind that you want to achieve (eg lose weight) you is this something you want to do or you think you should do. Part of the planning you should do before setting your goals is to examine your own motivation for doing something.

Start with the end in mind: If you’re planning and goal setting by yourself, one of the easiest things to do is having a mental picture of what life will look like when you’ve achieved this. Put as much flesh on this picture as you can and that will help you draw up very specific goals.

Be specific: There are different ways in which you can set goals, SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Time-bound) goals and SCCAMP (Specific, Control, Challenging , Agreed, Measurable, Personal), being two common ways. The most important thing is that they are specific to you and you have a very clear idea about what you are aiming for.

Kick any doubts into touch: Okay, that’s not as easy as it sounds, but if you’re planning and goal setting , think about any dissenting voices that might affect what you intend to do. These voices can be your own internal voice or the external ones of friends, families or work colleagues.

Decide how much you can take on: When you’re planning and goal setting, there’s nothing worse in my view than someone saying ‘you’re taking on too much’. I want to scream when someone says that to me. Who ‘s to decide whether you’re taking on too much? It’s something you have to find out for yourself. If you want to take on five different projects simultaneously that’s great – go for it. If you want to take on a single project, that great - go for it. Whenever you’re planning and goal setting just make sure that it’s about you and what you want.

Manage other people’s expectations: Often when you’re planning and setting goals, there are other people that you have to involve. Make sure that you’ve discussed with them before or as you start planning and be aware of the need to manage their expectations. There’s nothing worse than finding that you get derailed on your journey to achieving a goal by other people’s comments.

Plan how you’re going to reward yourself: I’m very big on people rewarding themselves. I think it’s important because we should all celebrate success as we go along but I also think that it can help to motivate you. A word of warning though, the rewards should match the achievement of the goals.

Planning and goal setting should always go hand in hand. Effective planning will ensure success in achieving your goals, but however you do it, make sure that it works for you.
