Goal Setting And Life Planning Guide

This article will teach you how to goal set and achieve your potential.

As a side note I would suggest having a paper and pen out.

Today we will try and answer this question: What would you be doing if your life was perfect and why?

Taking it one step at a time lets figure out what you want, why you want it, and how you will get it.

What?

The Method

Sit down somewhere quiet or plug in some classical music or even go for a walk.

Ask yourself the following questions, consider these categories for inspiration:

Health: Does my food help or hinder me in my ideal life? What would I eat if I was perfectly fit? Do I exercise lots? Where do I like exercising?

Wealth: How much money do I make? How much is in the bank? How do I make my money? Can I work from anywhere?

Relationships: How do I spend my free time? Do I have a wife? Do I see my friends a lot? Does my family support me in everything I do?

Higher purpose: What am I doing? Who am I helping?

Build up an image of your ideal life in this way.

Why?

Why would I love to achieve my vision?

For each of the categories above why would you love to have what you envisioned or why would you hate to live without it?

How?

Take your vision, what would you have done to get there? This is called back from the future thinking.Consider the time steps of from when your vision takes place and step backwards year on year/ month on month etc. until you reach today.

Now set SMART Goals to achieve your vision!

SMART goals stand for Specific, Measurable, Action-oriented, Relevant, Time-specific.

Here’s how I do it:

Specific - Describe your vision clearly (write down feelings, not just what you are doing).

Measurable – Take the classic this year I’m going to get fit… this isn’t measurable, instead say “I will run three times a week”

Action-oriented – Action goals are more compelling than passive goals so write goals where you have to put yourself out to achieve it.

Relevant – The back from the future thinking should show you if your goals are relevant as you can compare them to the time stepping and see if you are on track.

Time-specific – Using the time steps in the Back from the future thinking you can set monthly/yearly/5 yearly and 10 yearly goals to be achieved so make sure you include them in you setting session.

Two final tips.

1. Write your goals with words such as “I will easily do x,y,z”

2. Put your goals somewhere in eyesight i.e. a fridge door is perfect
