Brad Faxon\'s Putting Tips & Drills

Recently I watched a segment on the Golf Channel with Brad Faxon. He discussed some of his tips and drills for putting. Faxon was a little before my time, but he holds the PGA record for putting average fa a season in 2000. Today I am going to discuss two drills he uses and his putting routine.

2 Tee Pop

The first drill is the two tee pop. Place two tees in the green right in front of the ball just wider than the ball. But more narrow than the putter face. The objective here is to stop the putter just after impact. This is where the pop comes in play. By stopping you putter just after impact you are not allowed to follow through forcing you to pop the ball at impact. A long follow through does not affect the distance when putting. This will help fix the issue of having a short back stroke and trying to accelerate through the ball causing inconsistent distance and contact. Watch Brandt Snedeker next time he is on TV. He uses this pop stroke and he is one of the best putter on tour.

Coin Putt Around

The next drill to try is the coin putt around. Place a coin in between the hole and yourself along the line to the hole, so that you will have to putt around it not hitting the coin. Faxon stresses putting the line and not worrying about making the putt. The point of the drill is to practice the putting line and develop the consistency of putting a line and not worrying about making the putt. Practice 5-10 putts on either side of the coin. This will help you understand your putting lines and how the balls rolls.

Routine

Having a routine is huge and especially in putting. Faxon's routine before each putt is a practice stroke. look once, and putt. This simple routine is easy to repeat and takes the over thinking out of putting. Before your next round you can practice going through this routine with a 3 foot putt on the putting green going around the hole as a compass. Again don't worry about making these putts, but make sure you are practicing the routine.

Conclusion

I have practiced similar drills in the past on the putting greens, but these drills are simple and they don't require buying anything. My biggest takeaway was Brad Faxon's routine. He stated that he has done the same routine and same practice session before every time he has played for the last 25 years. I know I plan on implementing this routine the next time I play. If Brad Faxon uses it there must be something to it.
