Callaway FT Tour...That's What He's Playing?

It may or may not be a surprise that JB Holmes is leading the PGA Tour in driving distance so far for 2011. But most are probably not aware that JB Holmes has switched his entire arsenal over to Callaway, including the Callaway FT Tour driver. And he's not just leading this category by a few tenths of a yard. He is leading Chris Baryla by a full 5 yards averaging 314.5 yards per measured fairway hit.

Driving distance has come a Long way

No pun intended but seriously! I remember back in 1995 when the guy that was leading the PGA Tour in driving distance averaged less than 290 yards per drive. 289.0 to be exact. That guy was the monster hitter John Daly. That in itself goes to show that the technology of the equipment, specifically the Callaway FT Tour has changed a great deal in 15+ years.

What makes this driver go so far?

Just recently, Callaway has introduced a breakthrough technology that increases driving distance, especially on mishits. This technology is called Hyperbolic Face Technology. Introduced for 2011, this technology has helped create the highest ever ball speeds across the entire face that Callaway has ever produced. This precision shaping of the clubhead drastically enlarges the size of the sweet spot and off-center hits go longer and straighter.

Fusion Technology, the technology present in the entire line of Callaway FT drivers, utilizes a carbon composite body with a titanium face cup. This maximizes perimeter weighting and produces ultimate feel and performance. The FT Tour has a 440cc head with a sleek, traditional design. Callaway has kept the full length tour hosel, given the face a slightly open design which produces a more piercing ball trajectory and provided the buyer with an absolute array of custom shaft selections. Overall, the Callaway FT Tour driver is a driver that the majority of skilled players would enjoy standing over.

Can average joe golfer play this driver?

Absolutely. There are several keys to hitting the golf ball further. Having the most expensive and prettiest driver on the range doesn't necessarily entail that. You can buy any $500 driver from the store, but if the driver is not properly fit for you, you are missing the full potential of the club.

For example, let's say you are a guy in his 30s or 40s who is quite strong but really just rips at the ball and hopes. If this is the case, and let's just say you are getting the Callaway FT Tour, you will want to choose the FT Tour with a stiff shaft but most importantly, one with a higher loft, preferably the 10.5 degree. What this will do for you is maintain the shaft flex through impact because it is stiff enough and help control the ball flight a bit better by adding a bit of loft. The more loft on a club, the easier it is to hit straight.
