So you want to learn to play golf and don't know where to start. Or maybe you have committed to playing in a company tournament and now you are nervous about your ability.
No problem because even though golf for the beginner can be quite daunting there are a few basic things which can make the learning process so much easier and progress so much quicker.
Beware: This game is addictive - very addictive. Are you ready for that?
All right where were we? Ah yes golf for the beginner.
If I was starting to learn golf today I would:
- Go to the local golf club on a Saturday and find a reasonably good golfer and offer to caddy for him for free, in return for a few tips on the etiquette of the game. I would then watch him closely with a view to copying him. NB: Please only do this with a good player as they are more likely to do things right You don't want to go around copying bad faults. Caddy for a few weekends.
- Read as many top class instruction books and magazines as possible in an effort to get a feel for want I am trying to do.
- Go to the range as often as possible and start hitting balls with a very short and compact back-swing using no power at all. In other do not try to belt the skin off the ball.
- For every hour spent hitting golf balls on the range spend 2 hours chipping and putting. This part of the game is very important and should be in any manual that covers golf for the beginner. Remember that 100% of scoring shots happen on the green.
- Play as much as possible on the course. Initially just a few holes and as confidence builds increase the number of holes to 18.
- And finally as confidence builds go for a lesson with a pro who specializes in golf for beginners and has the ability to speak simple English and not treat everyone as if they want to become a professional golfer.
- Arrange to play with good players - nothing works quite so well as mixing with the people you would most like to play like.
You may not have the time to do all that. Maybe you have a game coming up this weekend and that is scaring the daylights out of you. That's ok too - just go to the range and hit the ball easy.
When you get out on the course for your game don't expect too much from yourself, have fun. Golf is for enjoyment - even for the beginner!
