Once you take up the game of golf, you immediately want to know how to get better. Most likely everyone you know who plays golf will have suggestions, tips and ideas on how to improve your swing and bring your scores down.
There is a good chance that many if not most of those of those well-meaning people will give you pretty decent advice. Unfortunately, it will also lead to information overload. You will have so much information running around in your head that it will become impossible to remember it all and still hit the ball with any consistency.
So, what I’d like to talk about is four easy to remember guidelines that will help you get ready to hit the ball better before you even start your swing. If you want to know how to get better at golf, these strategies will get you off to a great start. Soon you will have more threes and fours on your scorecard and less sixes or worse.
Tip 1 for How to Get Better at Golf: Make sure you are standing in a good position to hit the ball. You can have a beautiful swing and perfect contact between the club and the golf ball, but it will not make any difference if you are not aiming at your target.
As you get learn more about how to get better at golf, you will probably want to start aiming a little to the right or left of where you want your ball to end up. But for now, you should probably start by aiming directly where you want the ball to go.
The best way to accomplish this is to stand as if you are about to hit the ball. Then take your club and lay it down so that the shaft touches the tips of your shoes. Now step back and see where the club is pointing. Do this on the range for a while and soon you will adjust your stance to the proper alignment.
Tip 2 for How to Get Better at Golf: Make sure you feel comfortable before you start your swing. Many golfers who are just learning the game have a tendency to tense up their body before they begin their swing. This results in a chopping sort of motion that seldom lets you hit the ball well.
Everyone has different methods of feeling comfortable. I like a stance where I flex my knees slightly and bend a little at my waist. This allows my arms to fall in a manner that lets me grip the golf club with ease.
Tip 3 for How to Get Better at Golf: Make sure you are gripping the club properly. You will probably start out with a basic, ten-finger grip, just because it is going to feel most natural for you. As you play more golf, you might want to try out the interlocking or overlapping grip.
For now, be sure that you are holding the club in a way that lets you take a full swing at the ball. In general, this means that neither of your hands should be reaching too far in either direction around the club.
Tip 4 for How to Get Better at Golf: Don’t grip the club too tightly. This is one of the easiest mistakes to make. You think that you need to make sure the club isn’t going to move in your hands so you grab it like your life depends on it.
This often causes you to either swing too hard or fail to follow through. Either way, the ball is probably going off line and headed toward the rough, the bunker or the trees.
Some of the latest golf club reviews show how golf club manufacturers are making golf clubs more adjustable. Following these suggestions will allow you to take extra advantage of these new enhancements.
They also will let you figure out how to get better at golf quicker and make the game much more enjoyable.
Hi Kyle, Have you tried coming up with a line from a song or a phrase you can say in a certain way that will keep your tempo consistent. I've often wondered why someone hasn't developed a swing system based on music. Hope that helps.
That is an awesome idea Steve. I will try that next time I head out to the range and see what sort of results I get. Golf season for me is hitting full stride very soon (I am a fairweather golfer), so I will have a lot more time to work on my game (and tempo). Thanks again!
You certainly have a good way of explaining it, would make a good teacher!
Thanks, Sue. Unfortunately I'm not a good enough golfer to be a golf teacher. :-) It's one of those, I know what to do, but I have a hard time doing it deals.
Ok I'm ready to swing at something...some great beginner tips for getting better at golf. As you get better, why would you start to aim to the left or right ?
Hi J, Thanks for the good words. Regarding aiming to the left or right, that has to do with how the ball flies in the air after you hit it. The ball doesn't usually go exactly straight. Most players have a tendency to hit to ball where it starts going to the left of the target and moves toward the right, which is usually called a fade, or starting to the right and moving back toward the left, which is called a draw. Good players can hit it either way depending on the shot that is needed. It has a lot to do with where you aim and how the face of the club contacts the ball. If the ball goes too much from left to right it's called a slice. Too much from right to left is a hook. Many beginners have one of those issues, usually a slice. I hope that makes sense.
Somehow I can't imagine myself playing golf. It is too slow for me. But I might give it a try if I decide to slow down one day. And reading this article tells me it can pay off learning about it before you start. I can imagine it is more fun that way also
I accidentally hit remove instead of reply. I'll try to figure out how to undo it. Meanwhile know that golf is a very relaxing game. It can be extremely enjoyable.
