There is a saying that goes something like this "drive for show - put for dough". It's true many people concentrate on their driving and even chipping to get on the green and then they three putt. You'll never be able to break 80 if you're constantly two or three putting on the green. Here's a simple tip to help you to improve your putting and in fact the goal is to get it so that you never miss a put under 10 feet.
There are a great many factors involved in putting and reading the greens is one of them. This should start as you're approaching the green and you look at the at the placement of the flank. But this not one what we want to concentrate on today.
Were going to assume that you're on a practice putting green and your goal is to make every shot under 10 feet.
How can you do this? Put down two or three practice balls on the practice putting green and place them about a foot away from the hole. Now put your club right behind the ball and push the ball into the hole. Be sure not to strike at it - just push it into the hole. You'll notice that by doing this you are able to get all of your practice balls into the hole from this short distance. Now move back couple of feet and do the same thing. Don't strike the ball just push it toward the hole. Practice doing this until you're able to drop the ball every single time. You'll probably notice that you have far greater control over the ball by doing this than if you had swung back the club and hit it.
Now you're able to make every put from under 3 foot. Now move back to about 5 feet away from the hole and do the same thing. Push the ball into the hole - don't swing at it. Again you'll find your control is better and with a little bit of practice you'll find that you'll be able to hole the ball every time from about 5 feet away. From here it's just practicing from a longer distance. After you're able to do it from 5 feet, try it at about 8 feet. Then move out to 10 feet away. 10 feet is probably the maximum that you'll be able to push the ball after that you'll likely have to use some backstroke and strike at it.
What you've done however is learned how to control the ball and if you've practiced this a bit you will be able to make any put up to about 10 feet away.
This simple practice technique is so easy to implement and you'll be absolutely amazed at the results you get.
