Proper Golf Swing Tips

How well you hit the golf ball can make all the difference in the world between having a lot of fun or being completely miserable. I am going to break down the golf swing today in an easy to understand article. My proper golf swing tips will be something that you can implement this weekend while playing or hitting balls on the range.

Gripping the Club

There are many techniques for gripping a golf club. Most of us have swung a baseball bat at some point in our life. Gripping a golf club is similar to gripping a baseball bat. When you grab the club don't close your fist around the club tightly. Hold it loosely between the palm of your hand and your first knuckles. Your thumbs aligned and pointing down to the club face. Make sure it feels natural. The following picture shows an example.

Addressing the Ball

When you stand over the golf ball bend your legs slightly and stand naturally over the ball. What I mean is stand over the ball however far away or close to the ball that is the most comfortable for you. I recommend placing the ball just off the inside of your front foot for a driver and just of the inside of your back foot for a pitching wedge. All of your other clubs should be some variation with longer clubs more toward the front of your stance and shorter clubs toward the back of your stance.

Taking the club back

Now that you have addressed the golf ball you are ready to start your back swing. As you take the club back rotate your shoulders taking your club back on a inward plane. Your top hand should open up (think baseball swing here). The two things your should keep in mind at this point.

1. Keep your head still

2. Keep your left arm straight if you are right handed. It will be your right arm you keep straight if you are left handed.

Onto the downswing

Your downswing

Your downswing should start once your have completed your shoulder rotation. Picture your rotation like a wall is directly behind you. You want your shoulders to be parallel to the wall at the peak of your back swing. When you start your downswing you should feel like your a rubber band that is about to be let go.

Making contact and the motion through the ball

This is the final and most important part. Focus on eye hand coordination. Above all try to make solid contact. This is the impact zone you will rotate your wrist in a rolling motion through contact with the golf ball (again like hitting a baseball). I picture it like slapping the golf ball. I opened up my top hand on the way back now I am slapping the ball with the club face through impact.

This final move through the ball along with the other proper golf swing tips discussed will cause you to hit a straight shot or a slight draw with a very easy swing. It is the move that Tiger Woods and most pro golfers make that allows them to hit the ball long and straight with ease. If you practice and remember to incorporate these tips the next round could be your lowest yet! Good Luck.

Hit them long and straight!
