Putting Tips For Beginner Golfers

Congratulations on your choice to start playing golf. As you will soon find out golf is a great game that offers a lot of good times. But it will also be a heart breaker.

One of the best tips is to practice on your putting. This is where you will be able to save the most amount of strokes.

You've always heard that practice makes perfect, but thats not the case in golf. In golf, perfect practice makes perfect. So if you follow these tips you will be on the right track to being a good putter.

  1. Good Ball Position
  2. Line Your Putt
  3. Be Properly Aligned
  4. Eyes Over The Ball

Good Ball Position

This is where the ball is in relation to your feet. The following instructions are for right handed players, just reverse it if you are left handed.

We want the ball in front of your stance, just inside your left foot. This will ensure that you hit the ball on the upswing which will give the ball forward spin. This will lead a consistent ball roll that won't bounce around as much.

Line Your Putt

A lot of beginners make the mistake of estimating where to aim the ball and just walk up and hit the putt. This leads to inconsistent and erratic results.

So want you want to do is take a sharpie and draw a straight line on the ball. This way when you are the green you can mark the ball, clean it off, and properly line the ball up.

Just this one thing, you will see huge improvements in consistency on your putts.

Be Properly Aligned

You can be misaligned on any long shots and still hit it in the relative area of where you want. This is because the margin for error is much larger. But if you are misaligned on a putt, even by one inch, it guarantees an extra stroke.

To be properly aligned and make more putts, you want to be aligned parallel left at the target. This means that you want your feet to parallel to where the club face is aiming.

Keep Your Eyes Over The Ball

A good way to make sure that you are doing this is place a ball on the green and stand over it like you are getting ready to putt.

Then take another ball and hold it just under the bridge of your nose and drop it. It should land on the other ball.

If you do this then you are good.

Now What?

After you work on these drills, you will be in good shape in terms of technique. But you will still need to work on other important drills for putting which include:

  1. Distance Control
  2. Short Putts
  3. Eliminating Three Putts

I hope this information helps, and I wish you good luck on your journey in golf.
