6 Ways To Protect Plants For Freezing

You’re one of the lucky ones. You live in an area where your backyard is filled with citrus trees and plants that weren’t really designed for cold weather. Now, a freeze is coming. Here are 6 ways to keep all your favorite things alive.

1. Cover! Tuck your plants in for a cold winter night. Bed sheets, drop cloths and light blankets all work. Frost cloth from a nursery gives you the advantage of protecting plants, but it lets light through so you can leave up for a long period of time. Don’t use plastic to cover plants. Plastic isn’t thick enough to protect and, worse, if it touches leaves it can hold moisture against the plant tissue and do even more damage.

2. Water. That’s right. Water. Moist soil will hold heat much better than dry soil and will help protect roots. This doesn’t work for succulents so keep them dry.

3. Mulch Might Work. If it’s only going to be cold for a short period or if temperatures aren’t dipping too far into freezing, covering plants with straw or leaf mold might do the job. However, it needs to be removed when the danger of frost is over.

4. Use Containers. If you know you’re growing a plant that’s not suited for the cold in your area, consider planting in a container. When the cold is going to strike, you can bring the container inside or move it against a wall or other protected place where it can be covered and protected from the cold. Grouping container plants close together will help protect them.

5. Use a Light. If you have an outdoor lamp, put a 100-watt lamp in the interior of a small tree. It will emit enough warmth to reduce frost damage. LED lights don’t give off heat and won’t work. Christmas tree lights may do the job. Make sure that any light you use doesn’t touch a covering material where they could start a fire.

6. Spray for Protection. An anti-transpirant spray from your nursery will protect foliage on cold-sensitive plants. It will seal in moisture and an application can protect for up to 3 months with its invisible polymer film.

If you didn’t get everything protected, don’t panic. Plants can be quite resilient. Don’t prune away the frost damaged parts or dig the plant up. Leave the damaged foliage there to protect the plant and wait for spring. You may be surprised to see healthy new growth. Then, prune away the damaged parts of the plant.

You worry about your plants – but have you worried about your furnace. Especially those living in areas where furnaces aren’t necessary day in and day out may forget that a furnace needs attention, just like the plants. You want to stay warm so make sure you start each season with a furnace maintenance call from an HVAC/Air Conditioning Repair Phoenix AZ company. If you haven’t done and cold weather has started, don’t ignore it. Better late than never when it comes to having furnace maintenance that will keep you and your family warm and safe.
