New parents want the very best for their newborns and eco-friendly baby rooms are the best route to go. Planning how the babies’ room will look can be just as exciting as the birth itself for most young couples.
Decisions on the color of paint, wall hangings, type of crib, and furnishings will all have to be made. And usually, before the baby is born in order for him or her to have a wonderful new place to rest.
One important thing that needs to be understood is even though environmentally friendly baby products are being used, they must have time enough to outgas. Or release the small amount of contaminates present that a newborns brand new immune system can still be vulnerable to. Another concern should be the chemicals that never go away.
SVOC's or semi volatile organic compounds are dangerous and should not be used in the nursery or anywhere else in your house for that matter. Products containing PVC's, Flame retardants and Biocides are the usual suspects. The list of the culprits is lengthy. Interior materials, furnishings, caulk, toys, play mats, crib mattresses, vinyl blinds, and carpet padding can all contain these silent contaminates.
Look for paints and materials made of all natural ingredients. And be cautious of antimicrobial or mold resistant claims. This usually means some sort of chemical is being used to accomplish this. Take crib mattresses for instance. They are many times labeled natural, organic or eco-friendly and may still contain vinyl, or toxic flame retardants. This is because these statements are not heavily regulated and therefore can be quite inaccurate.
That just doesn't seem right does it? Well that's how it is, and you are responsible for doing the homework to find crib stores or green mattress stores, that offer a non-toxic product, that can meet fire safety standards naturally. You will find them made of materials like coconut core, coconut husks, coconut coir, organic wool, or forms of latex.
So before introducing these well thought out choices you have made to your babies room you must remove any existing harmful elements. Screen for mold and sources of moisture that can harm you and your baby. Get an inspection and replace the carpet if necessary. Carpet can conceal mold and so a hard floor would work best.
After all of this it would be senseless to dress your child in anything less than organic newborn baby clothes. Be sure to choose your child's clothes wisely and use the same criteria as you used for the other items in the nursery, non-toxic, chemical free, all organic clothes. This will help protect your infant's fragile immune system and help it grow stronger.
