Top 3 Myths About Solar Energy Panels

Rising energy costs are forcing people to turn to renewable sources of energy. The sun, being the most readily available source of energy, is also being utilised to power up homes and cities. We use solar panels to harness the sun's energy and convert it into a form of electricity which we can use. This idea is not new. However, we have been used to coal-powered plants and relied too much on fossil fuels to the point that we have denounced alternative sources of energy as too expensive to tap into, unreliable, inefficient amongst other things.

Here are the top 3 myths surrounding solar energy panels:

1. Solar panels do not work in cold and cloudy places.

Nothing is much farther from the truth! Solar energy panels only need ultraviolet (UV) light which is available during cloudy days and even in winter. An article from the Washington Post entitled "Cloudy Germany – a powerhouse in Solar Energy" asserts that solar panels work fine on rainy days, although it only generates about half of its usual electricity output. But most important thing is, it still works even in cloudy places.

2. Solar panels are too expensive to build.

It depends. You can buy commercial panels and have it professionally installed in your home. But these commercially-prepared panels cost about $10,000 for a 1 kilowatt home solar system. Yes, it is expensive. But there are government incentives and rebate to help you fund the cost. On the other hand, you can also build your own DIY solar energy panels. There are a lot of guides available in the internet.

If you think long-term, the investment you make by building a home solar panel system today will greatly benefit you in the long run. You only make a one-time payment during the construction process and reap the benefits for years to come. Plus, solar panels are low-maintenance. They rarely require maintenance or cleaning.

3. Solar panels are unreliable and inefficient.

On the contrary, solar energy systems can be more reliable than your local utility company. With solar energy, there are no power outages. Plus, you are in control with your electricity needs. If you require 1 kilowatt to power up your entire home, you need to install about 10-12 solar panels which requires about 100 square feet of installation area. Of course, you can adjust the size of your solar panel system depending on how much electricity you need. You can store this energy in batteries so you still have constant electricity available 24/7.

With advances in technology, solar panels that can withstand harsh climates such as snow, hail, strong winds and sleet, are now available. This was pioneered by the University of Vermont which develop an effective and maintenance-free solar energy system utilising dark-coloured solar panels and Southern positioning.

There you have it. We have just debunked the 3 most popular solar energy myths. Solar power systems are cost-efficient in the long run, very reliable and work in any weather conditions.
