Hair Shedding And Shock Loss After Hair Transplant

Many people have concerns about hair shedding and shock loss after a hair transplant. What are these two? Hair transplant surgeries in this day and age are getting a big hit due to the improvement in techniques and the better results that are acquired as a result of these techniques. With lesser invasive procedures, the downtime and postoperative care has been reduced substantially. Hair transplant clinics are very busy in Dubai these days.

There are, however, certain issues that are related with hair transplant surgery that remain despite all the advancement in the field. People are somewhat skeptical about hair transplants due to shedding and shock loss. These two terms are often misunderstood by the masses. Let us have a look at these two in details to understand them better.

Shedding

It is the process in which the transplanted hair at the donor site fall away after six to eight weeks of the transplant. Many transplant patients panic at this stage which is unnecessary. Hair shedding is a part of the process caused by hair going dormant and these hair are replaced by stronger, permanent hair in a few months’ time. Some of the transplanted hair may not shed.

Shock Loss

This is a process in which healthy follicles fall away after a hair transplant surgery. The transplant procedures are invasive and the skin goes through a trauma due to it. Some healthy follicles are lost due to this trauma which is known as shock loss. It generally takes place around the donor and recipient sites.

The amount of shock loss also depends on the type of hair transplant surgery. In Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT), there is likely going to be greater shock loss in comparison with Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) which is less invasive. This problem is temporary in nature and the follicles grow back in a few months. In case of hair follicles lost in shock loss had already been miniaturized, they will not grow back.

Eventual Result

After the hair shedding and shock loss, some of the hair starts growing back generally in about three months. Within a year, the transplanted hair reaches normal length and start looking very natural. The hair lost in shock loss also recovers by this time. In certain cases, this process may take up to 18 months.
