Here we will explain you the recovery process after a hair transplant surgery, as well as the reason “why Some Grafts are Not Growing while others are growing normally”.

If you have recently undergone hair transplant surgery then you must have noticed that some grafts are not growing. Most patients usually panic when they see transplanted hairs shedding off within a week or after noticing that some of their grafts have already started normal growth while others are yet to begin their journey. But you should not be among them! While Hair Transplant Surgery is a quick and simple procedure that involves numbing the scalp, extracting donor grafts and transplanting them in the balding areas, its recovery and hair growth is a little complicated and time taking process. Here we will explain you the recovery process as well as the reason “why Some Grafts are Not Growing while others are growing normally”.

As stated above, hair transplant recovery is a little complicated and time taking process. Your scalp will go worse before you will start noticing any signs of improvement and hair growth. A great majority of transplanted hairs shed during the first couple of months. Hair shedding process begins at around 4th to 6th week and continues for the next few weeks. You may also notice existing healthy hairs falling out. But even this should not panic you. Shedding of existing healthy hairs is known as “Shock Loss” – hair shedding due to the shock/trauma caused to the scalp during graft extraction and insertion.

Hair shedding process normally begins at the 7-10 day post surgery, while others just stay there, despite being disconnected from the follicle and the blood supply. These dormant stubs can sit in place disconnected for weeks or they can fall off at any time during the first two months. The best way to assess growth of a newly transplanted hair that has kept its place is to look at it after a couple of week. If it is longer than before, it is growing.

Generally 5% of the transplanted grafts kick start their growth right after the surgery, while others either stay dormant or fall out before they begin to grow. In some patients percentage of growing hairs immediately after the surgery is quite high as well, but they are exceptions. As far as the question about the percentage of hairs that actually survive and grow out of the total transplanted hairs is concerned, it varies widely from person to person, depending on a number of factors including healing tendency, the hair transplant technique used, quality of donor grafts and a lot more.

Surgical skills of the surgeon and his experience also play a crucial role in determining graft survival rate. In fact it primarily depends on how skilled and experienced your surgeon is. Therefore, it is important that you choose the surgeon meticulously. Go for a hair transplant surgeon who has a vast experience of performing transplantations on your skin type. Pre- and post op-care also play a vital role in quick and uneventful recovery, which ultimately guarantees maximum growth.
