Tiny House Family: Valuable Time

What is the biggest lesson I have learned from tiny house living?

This is a question I have been asked several times and until now, was unsure how to answer. I now know that my answer is intentional living. I have read blog post after blog post about intentional living. I have read excerpts and books about mediation and simplicity. I thought I understood the concept, although admittedly I was not practicing it. After being in the tiny house for only a short time I have come to understand what this idea of living by intention means. I will give my explanation in some absurd attempt to describe to you something that many other more educated people could not get through to me.

The best way I know to put it is that what you are doing is what you are doing. To explain a bit further; you are never, or at least rarely, cooking dinner while you are giving baths, doing laundry, catching up on email, and cleaning out the refrigerator. To go even one step further, you are never cooking dinner while your family is running around the house playing barbies, cowboys and indians, watching football, and ignoring all of the work you are pouring into a meal they are about to devour in mere minutes. They see all of your work and you see theirs (its only 172 square feet after all).

I could see how some people might see this as an item that might land on the “con” list rather than the “pros” (I was one of those people not so long ago). I have learned, however, that when your responsibilities shrink so drastically you have time to focus on preparing dinner just for the sake of providing a meal made from love for your family. What an awesome feeling, to enjoy the process and not just the result. To be able to prepare a meal and think about how much your child is going to enjoy the shapes you cut their veggies into or the smile on your husband’s face when you serve him the most gorgeous plate of food he has ever seen on the good plates and to do it without the burden of time and duties hanging over your head (and yes, there is room for good plates in a tiny house). It is the most wholesome, comforting, pleasurable, fulfilling, stress free, feeling I have felt in a long time.

Do you have other things that need to be done? Yes. Do you have children that still need to be bathed, books that you would like to get back to, laundry that needs to get done? Yes. Do you have more than enough time to do all of those things and still give your grandmother a call to make sure she is still doing alright? YES!

I guess the biggest takeaway from this is that you are doing what you want to be doing. It sounds simple but for some reason we never do it. We do what we have to, we do what we need to, and we do what is convenient, but do we WANT to be doing it? And when we do decide to do what we want, do we feel guilty that we are not doing something on our to-do list?

As a disclaimer I would like to highlight the fact that i do not believe in sitting around all day doing only what you “want.” I believe in contributing to society, working for what you have, and taking care of your land and your possessions. The difference is that when you have less to take care of, fewer monetary requirements, and greater focus, the have to’s tend to turn in to the want to’s.
