The fast pace development in information and technology has rendered many useful things useless, while also creating a dilemma for the consumer whilst making product choices. Every consumer now needs to get to know a product thoroughly before making the purchase, the consumer needs to compare it with every other product available too. The same is true when picking out an enterprise data center; it needs to have a high capacity, it needs to have a high performance and it also needs to lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) within the limitations of a budget.
An in-depth analysis in July, published by The Clipper Group, dealt with the comparison of the TCO for storing data on disk subsystems to the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) for utilizing tape libraries. The average TCO of tape libraries was calculated against LTO-6 and LTO-7. When compared to the LTO-6, the LTO-7 offers an increased native capacity per second i.e. from 2.5 TB/s to 6 TB/s as well as an increased native performance of 160 MB/s to 300 MB/s.
Unilateral pricing assumptions were added to the study and the cost of an LTO-7 tape disk was assumed to be 15% more than that of an LTO-6 tape disk. When compared to tape library configurations, it was seen that LTO-7 lowers the average cost of storing a TB of data on the disk for a longer term, hence, it enhanced the advantages of having a tape library rather than a disk-based storage solution. However, this result was obtained after many price assumptions.
Through various models, they came to a conclusion, that the cost advantage that tape has over the disk, cannot be disregarded, especially for the purpose of storing large volumes of data. The fact that the LTO-7 tape drive is available makes the library configuration, all the more, less costly than disk drives per TB.
There are some LTO’s that may face initial problems, but in the end the battle is being won LTO 7 but the Initial stage is being crucial for every tape to launch its pad on and prove itself in the upfront, to make this LTO run smooth and flawless, the experts team is being placed intact to work firmly on this to make things done and to resolve this issue as soon as possible. So it’s better to hold for criticizing more and lets wait for a better product that may come in upcoming months. This is what you all need to understand while pointing out to a single Procurement.
