Gpu, the Acceleration Check

GPU, short for graphics processing unit, is also called visual processing unit (VPU). It is a highly specialized electronic circuit designed primarily to alter and manipulate memory to accelerate the building of images in a frame buffer intended for output display in computers. It works parallel with CPUs in manipulating computer graphics, only that, it is more effective and faster. GPUs can be present on video cards, or it can be built-in on motherboards. Desktop and notebook computers today has this integrated on their system but far less effective and powerful than that of the dedicated video cards. The "worlds first GPU" was the GeForce256, marketed and popularized by Nvidia in 1999. It is a single-chip processor capable of processing a minimum of 10 million polygons per second. Quite fast huh! Imagine what modern GPUs right now can do with the graphics on your games and your renderings on programs like 3d Studio Max and Maya. Nvidia and ATI Technologies are 2 of the major producers of this technology. This technology has taken computer graphics to a new level. As an Architect and CG enthusiast I've also been fascinated with how GPUs of today has accelerated my work. It has produced quality work in a faster time.

Comparison of the Majors

There are at least two major graphics hardware producers on computers, they are Nvidia and ATI. Before, Nvidia was the choice for quality graphics performance, leading on its way was the GeForce 8800s. During that time Nvidia has dominated the world of computer graphics, and ATIs top tier cards like the Radeon HDs could not even compare. However, a couple of years ago, ATI has created innovations that has elevated their products to the top. Some of their latest video cards has really became a reckoning force with that of Nvidia, cards like the Radeon HD 4300/4500, HD 4600, HD 4700, and HD 4800 series. These series runs cooler with less consumption on power than Nvidia's GeForce series. Now, as we see, this two brands is currently in the uptrend, and I think It'll be in the next generations to come. And so, it will be a battle between the GeForce 400-series and the Radeon HD 5-series for PC gamers and CG enthusiasts.

Update on the latest

The Radeon HD 5970 ATI's most powerful card, as is the GeForce GTX 480 of Nvidia. Although 5970 is a dual GPU card, it is, however considered a single slot card , and so there is still this competition with the GTX 480. But the GTX 480 has never won a benchmark against the 5970. At what cost? About $599. That is $100 more than the GTX 480 at $499. However, this extra cost is justified due to the significant increase in performance. When compared to the Radeon 5970 at 300 watts TDP (Thermal Design Power), Nvidia's card is still a power hog at 250 watts TDP. But there's nothing to whine about, the values are still even when power consumption on the 5970 is considered.

Conclusion

With these specs, it really is confusing for gamers and CG enthusiast which computer graphic card to choose. Both companies has really taken the competition to the next level. Even though Nvidia has only released for now three DirectX 11, the GTXs 470 and 480 can still level the playing field for the top Radeon HD cards. Because of the prize and power consumption, the GTX 465 cannot be that promising. The 5830, 5870, and 5950 really offers great performance but low power consumption, and one cannot really go wrong with that if he opt to choose the product. However, it would not also be that bad if one chooses Nvidias GTX 470 or even the 480, if performance is considered.

Great info, thanks! They have come so far with these cards, and I am sure they will keep changing.
