The iPhone 3GS has been released in the year 2009 and if you got one then chances are that you've got it for more than a year or so. Now all batteries typically have a certain lifespan of charging cycles that you can do before its battery doesn't perform well anymore. It would probably take you a year before you notice that you're battery doesn't charge anymore to its full potential. I will show you here how to get your battery replaced and what your options are.
Apple Warranty
Your iPhone usually comes with a one year warranty upon purchase. But Apple will only replace it if it drops below 50% of its original capacity, which i think would never happen if you have good charging habits. If in any case this does happen to you, then don't hesitate to have it replaced by Apple for FREE!
Apple Service
Apple also offers their services to get your battery replaced at $79 (not including the shipping fee). This service can be availed online so you have to send your iPhone to them to have it fixed which explains the shipping fee cost. Now you have to make sure that your iPhone hasn't been damaged due to an accident or you're iPhone wouldn't be eligible for this service.
iPhone 3GS Battery Replacement Kit
Did you ever considered doing it yourself? Well now you can, with third-party companies making these kits to provide you with the necessary tools to replace your battery, this is one thing you definitely want to consider. Taking the old battery out of your iPhone is not as easy as sliding the back cover off. There are screws and connections that need to be taken out before you even reach the battery itself. This is because the battery is situated at the back of its motherboard.
So how do you replace the battery using these tools?
You've probably been thinking that only a "techie" guy would know how to do it, so what's the use of getting these kits if you don't know how to use them in the first place?! Well, you're in luck because these companies also provide videos on how to replace your battery step-by-step, so you don't have to worry about a thing on what to do. The kit will also include a replacement battery so you don't need to buy another one when you get one of these. These kits are sold for less than $20 so they are really a good bargain. But please take note that replacing the battery on your own or by other third-party companies will void your warranty from Apple.
So there you have it, I've shown you the different options you have in getting your iPhone 3GS Battery replaced. Choose whatever you're comfortable with and whatever you're willing to pay for.
oh thanks for sharing this! My mum has an iphone. Going in and out of state is part of networking business that she's doing and because we have no landline at home she has no other choice but to rely on her iphone alot to contact people. I should let her know the alternatives for battery replacement. this would be really helpful for her in the future.
My son has an Ipod. I think some of the same lessons would apply it and other high-tech devices. Good info.
i love smart phone, i still miss my iPhone, great article Jan!
I'm not a big iphone user to be honest, I'm more geared towards older style phones. Interesting read though.
