The term Naugahyde was coined in 1936 and is a trademark of the Uniroyal Engineered Products division of the Uniroyal company.  This is actually an engineered plastic consisting of a knit fabric backing up a Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) coating.  In the 1960's an advertising campaign suggested that Naugahyde was the skin of an animal called the Nauga.  This was more environmentally friendly as the skin was shed by the Nauga and did not require the animal to be killed to aquire the Naugahyde.  In fact, Polyvinyl Chloride is a petroleum product and requires oil for its manufacture.

Leather supplied for leather IPad cases is typically acquired from cows.  Pigskin is also available as a soft supple covering.  The hide is tanned and sized to the correct grade.  The tanning process is a chemical change that the hide is subjected to.  This removes the bacteria that is present in raw hides and changes the chemical makeup of the proteins that are present to make the hide resistant to decay and more pliable.  When tanned the hide then becomes leather.  Dyeing occurs during the tanning process and creates the warm browns or deep blacks that are present in most finished leathers.  The tanned leather is then finished to create a smooth coat and can then be tooled or embossed to enhance its appearance.

When selecting one of the leather IPad cases on the market, you need to check to make sure that you are actually getting leather and not an alternative product that is PVC.  The manufacturers that choose to make their covers from leather take the time necessary to create a quality product.  There are Chinese knockoffs that promote their products as leather but you will find that the quality, the fit and finish, and the durability of the products that are supplied are substandard.  They will not hold up to the test of time and in the long run you will be disappointed with your purchase. Quality materials result in quality products that will provide continued value over time.
