Amazon's Kindle Fire is a mini-computer with a dual processor that will allow you to read books downloaded online, download music, games, magazines and such. You can browse the Internet in bright sunlight. And it is in full color. It has about 6 gigabytes of free memory suitable for most people. There is also "cloud memory" to allow quick delivery of your favorite media.
The Kindle come in a box with power adapter and a quick start guide. It weighs just under a pound and it is small enough to hold in your hand but most users say they like to have some support under the device while they are using it. The display is in color with high resolution. It is seven inches wide, just under the total width of the device (7.5" x 4.7" x 0.45" (190 mm x 120 mm x 11.4 mm).
The battery last about 8 hours if just reading but it may be shortened by Internet surfing, etc. It takes about four (4) hours to recharge it.
It is Wi-Fi equipped and has audio (head phones) and USB ports. The audio system includes two stereo speakers.
The Amazon Kindle Fire is popular mainly because of its price and it actually sells below Amazon's cost according to many of those who have reviewed it. This is hard for me to believe. It may be that Amazon is just selling below some suggested retail price. Maybe not. I just don't believe everything I hear or read.
The advantage of such a small computer is that you can take it wherever you go, watch your favorite movies, play your favorite games, read your favorite magazine and you can read all the books you want. Amazon claims you can store ten (10) movies or 6000 books.
One buyer who travels overseas on long flights says that is not good enough. How many books can you read on an 8 hour flight? Who would want to stare at a minicomputer screen for 8 hours. I prefer to look out the window if I can get near one.
The Kindle Fire come with a one year warranty but Amazon will be glad to sell you an extended warranty. I never buy such warranties. This is a pretty durable device including the screen so I will take my chances.
Are you into this sort of thing? Do you like to have a minicomputer to stick in your purse so that you can play a game or watch a movie or read a book or fiddle around on the Internet? Do you want to save some money over the other choices? May be the Kindle Fire is right for you.
But don't expect to take pics as you go. There is not camera. I guess it was just not in the economics of the thing.
