Now I've never had migraine, but I know plenty of people who have. The closest I've come to such a hellish pain was when I used to contract my weekly stress headaches. They were quite bad enough, thank you.
Pain and symptoms for migraine headaches affect about 30 million Americans, which is a whole lot of migraines. Those usually affected are between the ages of 15 and 55, but of course that's very general. It's said that migraines become less severe and frequent with age, but I know a lady who suffers about three migraines a week! It does seem to be inherited. This lady's two daughters suffer migraines as well.
Doctors do know that migraines are actuated by certain triggers, but of course these triggers vary from one person to the next. No-one knows what actually causes these terrible headaches, but it's recommended that you keep a log of when you have a migraine. What were you doing? What time was it that it started? What did you eat and drink 24 hours before it started?
This question for women only, (I know this because I've never had one!), every day you suffer your period. The doctor might be able to diagnose the proximity of the headache to this.
There are two types of migraine. The first has an aura, the second does not.
A friend of mine who suffered migraines badly used to see a blue light exactly 40 minutes before one started. He knew he had to find a dark place to lie down within that time frame. Generally, though, the time frame is shorter, perhaps 10 to 20 minutes.
Women have this aura less frequently than men, but if you do have this manifestation, it appears as zig-zag lines, flashing lights or numbness in the face and hands, to name three.
A migraine that is not accompanied by an aura is called a 'common migraine', which makes this awful agony seem like a garden variety headache!
Conditions that may trigger a migraine include stress and anxiety or relaxation after stress, so with this, you're damned if you do and damned if you don't. Strong smells, loud noises and bright lights. This is quite understandable. Changes in the weather. This lady I know dreads rainy days. She's guaranteed a migraine with such conditions. Alcohol, which again is fairly obvious. Aspartame, which is a sugar substitute, Nutra Sweet, and Equal.
But this is where your log book comes in handy. You can note if it rained, or is raining. Are you sweetening your tea or coffee with substitute, etc. There are lots of other supposed triggers, but a lot of it is grasping at straws, simply because of the ignorance of the cause.
There's sometimes confusion between an actual migraine headache and a sinus headache. Both are frightful, but it's wise to discover which type of headache you have. If you're sensitive to light, a severe headache coupled to nausea, the chances are you have a migraine, perhaps with sinus symptoms.
Certain headaches can mean a more serious problem. Conditions that disrupt your daily life, such as work and home life. A number of headaches a month which last for a long time. A bad headache accompanied by a stiff neck. After being hit on the head. You've never suffered headaches before, but all of a sudden, they're coming thick and fast.
Any condition just mentioned should merit a call to your doctor's office.
There's a great deal more to discuss about migraines and headaches in general, which we'll examine later on.
I do hope this article proves useful to you.
Thank you so much, Joan and Heather, for your very kind comments on my article. Yes, this auric field is most interesting. So far, the aura seems to be a warning, experienced by some, but not others, and here's the rub, really. If everyone had an aura, then it may be possible to pinpoint some sort of cause or even cure for these hellish headaches, but not everyone does. It';s a most interesting point, though. Many thanks again, Every good wish, Mike
Many thanks indeed for your comments on my article, and Shawn's home remedies sound most interesting. You put it so well; a whole other world of pain. I can well believe this, although as I said I only suffered bad stress headaches. Many thanks again, and all luck to Shawn in his experiments. Every good wish, Mike
Migraines are this whole other world of pain. I do hope that some home remedies Shawn is writing about will uncover some ways to relieve the hideous affects. I have a girlfriend who gets them and she does her best to keep a log of factors as they occur to try and glean some kind of pattern. Important topic Mike.
Very informative article Mike. Luckily, I don't suffer from migraines. I learned from my sister that they can be very bad. She has them once in a while. I've had bouts of vertigo, and that terrifying. What Heather said about the auric field is interesting. I imagine much can be healed in the auric field. If you can see energy, or even feel it, you can tell where the problems are.
Mike, I luckily have little experience with migraines although my mother worked out as a teenager that the smallest amount of chocolate will give her one. Hearing you mention the aura makes me think of energy healing and I wonder what people's experiences are with that and if people with migraines are unknowingly more in tune with their auric field and it's disturbances? Just my interest. Great article.
