Are Your Adrenal Glands Overworked: How Adrenal Gland Fatigue Can Affect Your Body

If you are not familiar with the adrenal glands, you are not alone. Often overlooked, the adrenals are small, triangular shaped glands that sit on top of each kidney. They are endocrine glands that are responsible for regulating the body's response to stress by the release of either a corticosteroid or a catecholomine. The latter includes cortisol and adrenaline. In addition, the adrenal glands are key to a healthy immune system and help to balance other hormones in the body.

Fatigued adrenal glands can cause a number of negative symptoms including excessive sweating, random pain that seems to have no explanation especially in the lower back or the knee. Dark circles under the eyes, muscle twitches and heart palpitations are also common..

There are no less than thirteen commonly accepted symptoms to suggest that the adrenal glands are coming under fire and cannot handle the load any longer, but many of them are missed or might be mistaken for symptoms of other conditions.

Many of the other symptoms of overworked adrenal glands directly impact weight gain either because of the lack of energy to workout or because of the various cravings that can be caused. Lack of sleep or poor sleep quality can also contribute to weight gain as can a changed response to thyroid hormones in the body.

Adrenal glands are key to the body's reaction to stress- when they are fatigued they may release more of the stress hormone, cortisol than normal. Cortisol increases body weight, especially in the belly area. Fat that gathers in the abdominal region is associated with dramatic increases in heart disease.

There are several ways to help the adrenal glands get back into a more healthy balance. It is crucial to get enough sleep and that the sleep you get be of good quality. It is also just as important to make sure that you are scheduling in time for yourself every day so that you can relax and unwind. Yoga and other gentle exercises are also good suggestions to help relax and can also help to ease the stress on the adrenal glands.

Eating a clean diet, especially one that puts less emphasis on red meat, fatty foods and refined sugar is also suggested. Those foods all cause stress in the body which can in turn put additional strain on the adrenal glands. Trying to keep cravings down is also easier when you are not eating some of the biggest trigger foods.
