What are the health benefits of raw honey?

Raw honey is a wonderful food. Sweet and healing it was once considered the food of the Gods in ancient Greece. And when looking at all the properties of raw honey it starts to make sense.

What exactly is in raw honey?

Raw honey is full of enzymes, antioxidants, as well as vitamins and minerals. Honey also helps combat damage from free radicals, and gives a good boost to the immune system.

The minerals in raw honey are: iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and selenium.

Vitamins include B6, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin.

Why choose raw honey?

There are many health benefits to raw honey, compared to regular honey that has been pasteurized. Raw honey has all it's enzymes and nutritional value intact.

Honey has long been used for medicine, from curing a sore throat to aiding the body in its battle against viruses and bacteria. Indeed honey has been proven to be both antiviral and antibacterial, and was used long before pharmaceuticals came into our lives.

Gives you energy

Forget about those energy drink you see at the gym. Instead bring a bottle of water and raw honey, and perhaps a pinch of salt and lemon juice, and notice how you feel as you drink it. This is a great drink when working out, but also to sip throughout the day, or to wake you up in the morning.

Soothes you to sleep

One of the most soothing and relaxing drinks I know is warm milk with honey. My mom used to make it for me in the evening before watching batman on TV. Those were some wonderful times. Most of the time I would drink it just as a treat, but it's such a wonderful way to end the day and prepare for a good nights sleep.

Heals minor wounds. Moisturizes dry skin.

Personally I've used honey to heal painfully dry and cracked skin. And I've decided to always have honey in the kitchen in case I should burn myself while cooking. A friend of mine managed to pour boiling hot water over her foot. She applied honey and it helped heal the skin on her foot. Another friend also used honey when she sprained her arm, and has inspired my interest in raw honey health benefits by claiming that honey can be used on pretty much any minor injury.

Much better than sugar

I've also found that honey doesn't cause join pain the way regular refined sugar does. It also doesn't seem to spike my blood sugar in the same way. I love honey. I use it in my tea, in my yogurt and even as an ingredient in cookies, muffins etc.

Again, what were the raw honey health benefits?

Raw honey has wonderful enzymes, minerals and vitamins for your body. It also boosts your energy, can soothe you to sleep (when mixed with warm milk), and is a medicine cabinet in itself. It can heal burns, bruises and works as a moisturizer to your skin. It is a much healthier sweetener than regular sugar.

Those are some of the health benefits of raw honey. There are just too many to list here! Bottom line is that raw honey is a lot healthier than regular, pasteurized honey. It's worth the extra bit of money to get truly raw honey, that is medicine to your body in so many different ways.
