What if I told you that you could play a fun game and for each right answer, you could be donating 10 grains of rice to a hungry person? It is true! You can even watch your virtual rice bowl fill up as you rack up correct answers.
The rice is given through the World Food Programme. This is the branch of the United Nations devoted to food aid. It is currently the world's largest humanitarian organization addressing the need of hungry people worldwide. Amazingly, the WFP (World Food Programme) provides food to 90 million people (on average) per year. 58 million of the food recipients are children. In fact, the WFP focuses most of its food assistance to those who are most vulnerable to hunger, which frequently are women, children, the sick and the elderly.
WFP is increasing the use of cash and vouchers which enable hungry people to purchase food locally rather than receiving food assistance. Cash and vouchers are preferable (where food is available for purchase) in the marketplace, but people lack the resources to buy it.
There are several "topics" set up to play the rice game:
* Humanities: Famous Paintings, and Literature
* English: Vocabulary and Grammar
* Chemistry: Chemical Symbols (Full List) and (Basic)
* Geography: Flags of the World, Identify Countries On The Map, World Capitals, and World Landmarks
* Math: Multipication Tables, and Basic Math (Pre-Algebra)
* Language Learning: German, Spanish, French and Italian
* Sciences: Human Anatomy
I am wondering, exactly how much is 10 grains of rice? It depends on what kind of rice... Wikipedia states that a white long grain rice averages about 29,000 grains in a pound. So 2900 right answers will "buy" a pound of rice. You should tell all your family and friends to come and play the rice game!
I was reading in their brochure: The Right Food At The Right Time, and it said: "Nearly 200 million children under five in the developing world are chronically undernourished or stunted, while the number of underweight children is close to 130 million." Absorbing these statistics just about tears your heart in two! Especially if you are a parent or grandparent, and thinking about your own kids. In children under 2 years, malnutrition is especially damaging. WFP's goal is to target its food interventions - and make sure that children, and
adults, get the right food at the right time.
At the WFP website is a donate button where you can directly support this worthy cause.
