Being Vegan Is Easier Than You Think

When I tell people that I am a vegan, I'm often asked the question "how do you do it". I tell them "being vegan is easy"! And it really is. There are some things to change from being a carnivore, or even a vegetarian, to being a vegan, but once you get the main idea, it's quite simple. Over the next few minutes I'm going to share with you some non-threatening ideas about how to omit the meat and say hello to a new world of health.

After the I answer the 'how' question, often comes the 'why'. So before I tell you how easy it is, I'll spend a few seconds on the reasons to be a vegan. You'll eat less fat, making you have an easier time keeping fit. You'll eat more fiber, naturally occuring in fruits, vegetables and legumes which aid maintaining hydration, removing toxins from the body and 'regularity'. You'll almost surely feel better than you do now, even if you currently feel just fine. And finally, you'll have plain old satisfaction knowing you are doing the best you can to keep your body in tip-top shape.

So the above stuff sounds good, right? And it's all so easy, it just takes a little education. And to illustrate I'll tell you my reverse-vegan story. I grew up vegetarian, which means I knew little to nothing about preparing meat. So when I married a carnivore and was suddenly immersed into the meat preparation world, I was at a total loss. What was it 'safe' to do with meat? How long do I cook it? What parts do I throw away? Eventually I got it, but not without some instruction and just a little sheepishness on my part.

If that story sounds like a 'duh' situation, good, because being vegan is easy, too. The biggest changes you'll face are the meats themselves, which have a shape and texture that you'll have to forget about. There are some substitutes that make a good try at looking, tasting and smelling like meat but nothing is exactly like it. But put that aside and the rest of the omissions and substitutions are easy. Used to using real butter? There are many other things to use in it's place, and they still taste good. Love a glass of milk for breakfast? Try almond milk. And what about cheese? Well, there is nothing quite like the real thing but you can find substitutes. There is even a recipe for mac n' cheese that is absolutely delicious! I make it myself frequently.

There is a whole world of food out there to be eaten, and most of it has nothing to do with animals. We just have to figure out how to prepare it. This may sound scary, but if you try the vegan lifestyle you just might find the nicest surprise in eating raw foods. I won't go deeply into it, but suffice to say it's really fast, very easy and will always fill you up.

You see, being vegan is easy, if you are willing to open your mind to the many reasons to be a vegan, think about what you eat rather than 'going through the routine' and make it a hobby. You just might start telling your friends "yeah, being vegan is easy, and here's why".
