Cancer Prevention With Pineapple And the Enzyme Bromelain

Pineapples are not only sweet and delicious, they have wonderful health benefits. Arthritis and gout can be relieved by eating this tropical fruit. It is also good for sore throats and bronchitis.

But perhaps the greatest value in pineapple discovered so far is its ability to fight cancer and particularly stomach cancer with the enzyme bromelain.

Bromelain is an enzyme that breaks down proteins in the body and releases the amino acids that form them. (The food industry has long used the bromelain in pineapples as a meat tenderizer.)

When we eat pineapple, bromelain goes to work in our digestive tract, facilitating digestion and breaking down proteins. It works in a way that is similar to the pepsin enzyme in our stomach. Pineapple is an excellent digestive aid.

It is also a powerful defense against carcinogens (cancer- causing agents) that form in the stomach. It does this by stopping the carcinogens called nitrosamines. These occur as a chemical reaction in the stomach to certain proteins in our food. Nitrosamines are a leading cause of stomach cancer.

Bromelain has even been shown to be better at fighting cancer than some cancer drugs. In 2007, it was published in medical journals that a chemical called 5-fluorouracil that has been given to cancer patients for 40 years-- was inferior to bromelain-- a natural substance!

Some health experts say discoveries about natural substances, such as the bromelain enzyme in pineapple, do not always get a lot of news coverage. One reason is that the pharmaceutical industry is mainly focused on drug therapy.

How to Choose Pineapples

Pineapple will only ripen on the plant. If it is harvested too soon it will be poor in nutritional value. You can tell if a pineapple is ripe by its intense aroma. The outside of it should yield to finger pressure and the leaves will easily come off.

Fresh pineapple is best, although it still retains most of its nutrients when it is canned. The canning process removes most of the bromelain enzyme, however, so fresh pineapple should be eaten whenever possible. Also, canned pineapple does not aid digestion as much as the fresh variety.

When making pineapple juice, cut it into chunks and place in a blender. Drink the juice right away to get the full nutritional value of the pineapple’s properties. Pineapple juice should not be gulped down. It should be drunk slowly.

One more thing about pineapples and stomach cancer: researchers have for many years noted a connection between salty diets and stomach cancer. If you like salty foods it might be a good idea to eat pineapple at least once or twice a week.
