Candida – Hiding In the Shadows

There is a very real problem hiding within the shadows of my neighborhood. And chances are it is also hiding in your neighborhood. It has grown up alongside of our progressive civilization. It tends to lurk in the dark recesses of many homes in places where people wouldn't think to look. And even if it does show its ugly head, most don't recognize or understand what it is or how to treat it. I am talking about Candida, more commonly referred to a as yeast infection. And it may be hiding inside of you!

Almost everyone has wrestled with a yeast infection at some point in their life. Yeast on the skin appears as a small red rash shaped like a ring. Have you every heard of ‘fairy rings’? Same thing, only the ring is growing on you! Yeast will normally show up someplace on a part of your skin that remains moist most of the time. My infection showed up on the inside of my right leg. A quick trip to the doctor to get some anti-fungal cream and 3 weeks later, the rash was gone. What a pain! This is how most people relate to a yeast or fungal infection. But Candida has a much more sinister nature! With Candida, it is always an ‘inside job.’

Candida carries with it the same nature as a yeast or fungal skin infection. But because it resides and is contained inside your body, its appearance and presence are perceived differently than the classic skin infection. A few of the possible symptoms of a Candida infection (usually after eating) include upset stomach, pain in the lower abdominal area, a bloated feeling, intestinal gas, heartburn, and cramping. Because most people don’t know what they are dealing with, they will attempt to treat these Candida symptoms with ant-acids but usually find little or no relief.

How prevalent is Candida in our society? Present estimates show that 1 out of every 4 people host some form of this infection. How does a person get infected? The most common way is by overusing antibiotics. In our present medical culture it is too easy to prescribe an antibiotic to eliminate viral of bacterial infections. This also applies to the ever-present flu bug. The problem with using antibiotics is that they do not discriminate between beneficial and the harmful bacteria. The stronger antibiotics often kill off the beneficial bacteria that are living in our digestive tract. The beneficial bacteria are useful for controlling the over-growth of Candida. And because Candida is much more aggressive then the good form of bacteria, after the antibiotic treatment has stopped, Candida wins the race to return and dominate our digestive area. And the yeast trouble quietly escalates.

Also, let’s understand that yeast, bacteria or virus are usually transmitted between hosts after direct exposure. This means that if someone who is hosting a Candida infection simply does not wash their hands when handling food; anyone who eats that same food has now been exposed to the same infection. This is the same precautions we would use during the flu season. WASH YOUR HANDS to prevent the spread of all viral and bacterial infections! Some things you don’t need to share with your friends!

The Candida problem always starts somewhere in the digestive tract. This will include the mouth (called thrush), the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine and colon. If it is treated early, it can be easily reversed. But if left untreated, this type of infection will spread and eventually migrate through the lining of your ‘gut’ and into your blood system. When this occurs, every organ of your body will be exposed to the infection. At this point it becomes very difficult to treat and effectively reverse.

I had wrestled with the symptoms of Candida for over 40 years and didn’t know what the problem was. For the past two years, I have learned much about how to control Candida’s behavior, influence, and symptoms through the effective use of supplements along with a change of menu. There is a path that the Candida sufferer can follow which allows them to get back to living a normal life (even with that ‘little bug’ hiding in the shadows)!
