Fitness Is The Key To A Long And Healthy Life

When we talk about fitness, we usually associate it to weight. We go to the gym to lose weight and to sculpt our body but is it the main reason we should do our exercises?

According to various studies, it’s been proven that being fit decreases your risk of premature death from heart attack, stroke, cancer, etc. People should be more interested in improving their fitness level rather than trying to lose weight. So even if you are struggling with your own weight, carry on exercising regularly as this will make you live longer. If you are skinny and think you can get away with that, don’t fool yourself. You also need to be fit if you want to live longer, especially if you have other habits such as smoking or drinking.

Now, you’ve been convinced that exercise is good and although you haven’t been in a gym for ages, you’re ready to be “back in business”. How can you be sure of how much exercise is needed? Firstly, you can get advice from your GP especially if you have a medical condition, pregnant or elderly. If you haven’t done exercise for a long time, start slowly to avoid any injury.

Remember that to be consistent is the key to success. Even if it’s only for 10 to 30 minutes, repeat the exercise every day or every two days. To make it easier, try to choose a regular time of the day. You can also keep a diary of your fitness activities and check regularly your progress to encourage yourself. To make it more fun, work out with a partner who has the same needs as you or alternatively join a fitness club. To distract you of the pain, why not listen to music, watch TV or exercise in a nice outdoor environment (forest, zoo, beach)? Finally, choose sports that you like and vary the activities as much as you can.

To complement your fitness programme, try to include simple exercises in your daily routine. For example, instead of taking the elevator, choose to take the stairs. Walk on your way to work rather than using transport. Don’t forget that walking at a fast pace is the best exercise if done on a daily basis (around one hour per day). You won’t get injured and you will improve your fitness condition and your chances of living longer. Think about it! Having an ultrasound scan or MRI scan can be a good idea if you are a smoker or drinker, this can give you a reality check and help you cut down or even stop all together!
