Do you sometimes wake up in the morning feeling like you haven’t slept all and do you worry about how much sleep you’re actually had?

How much sleep you need will differ from person to person. Some of us can manage on very little sleep and others need a good 7-8 hours, which is probably the average amount. People have different sleep patterns according to their jobs and their lifestyles. If you work night shifts for instance than your sleep patterns will need to be adaptable to sleeping during the day hours. When you don’t feel as if you are having enough sleep then try and fit in 20 minute naps where you are able to. Scientists have said that having a twenty minute nap after our lunch can be equal to an hours sleep at night.

Tips to help you sleep

• Before going to sleep aim to relax your body and mind. You could do this by listening to some soothing music and, or, by taking a warm bath or a shower.

• Exercise is known to help with sleeping but you should try to avoid exercising in the evenings. This is because exercise raises your adrenalin levels. Adrenalin is great to have when you need a boost of energy, but this is not what you are wanting to achieve at bedtime.

• You should be aware of your eating habits in the early evenings as eating sugary carbs is going to reduce your sleep and could give you indigestion. Also you might think that alcohol; will be a sleep inducer. Alcohol can make you feel quite drowsy but it has been shown to suppress the deep sleep that you need to have to feel rested.

• Keep your bedroom clean and clutter free. Clutter attracts dust mites and can cause skin irritation.

• If you have a snoring partner and its keeping you from sleeping, then try using some ear plugs for yourself.

• If the early daylight wakes up and then you can’t get back to sleep try using blackout curtains and also remove any clocks or techno items if their noise is irritating you.

• Try not to do any activity that is going to stimulate your mind before bedtime. So ideally put your laptop away and aim to not watch TV or play computer games. When you go to bed you do not want your mind to be mulling over the latest TV gossip or thinking about beating your friends latest score on game channels.
