Healthy Food Snacks

Most of us who has tried strict diets have had cravings for something we are not allowed to eat. This can be anything really, but normally it is either something sweet or something salt. It is a good idea to do some research on what snacks are actually healthy and beneficial for you. Some can actually be included in your diet and some can’t, that really depends on how strict your diet is.

I love to include almonds in my diet. They are tasty and really help me stay away from both sweet and salt cravings during the day. This can be anything from eating a handful of them in the morning, to mix them up in a fresh salad for evening dinner. Almond is a nut or a seed some might say, and can be beneficial for you in many ways. Some even say that they increase brain power! Wow how about that!

As with many other things from the nature, there have been some heavy studies on what the almond is actually beneficial for. One of the studies was on how it helped lowering cholesterol level in your blood. Another was how it helped in preventing colon cancer. One of the great benefits when on a weight loss diet is that they are full on nutrition’s and will help you get rid of cravings so you don’t overeat. They are high in fibers which will help your digestion and reduce the risk of heart disease.

But there are many other great snacks you could kill cravings with. There is just one rule of thumb with most of them, which is eating in moderation. Nuts are fat and while the fat is not the bad kind, it will still make you gain weight if you eat too much of it. With almonds as an example, it is said to eat a handful a day which is around four to eight almonds.

Raisins are known as nature’s healthy candy, and are another healthy snack you should consider for killing the sweet cravings. They have a high amount of potassium and are low in sodium which is beneficial for your health. Fiber level is high in raisins and therefore they can help your digestion just as the almond, which will keep the colon in a healthy state. Raisins are high on calories and namely carbohydrates which make them great as an energy boost snack just before workout. But it does also mean that you need to consider carefully how many you eat since overeating can give you a setback in your battle for weight loss.

The internet is flooding with great information sites. It is time for you to do research based on what you like and then make a plan for your healthy lifestyle. Good luck.

Great article Thom... I'm afraid I like to snack on other things as well like chocolates, but as I get older in the tooth and my weight remains constant now, I like the treats... I hate raisens unless they're encased in a Chelsea bun, nuts etc are certainly enjoyable when encased in a chocolate...

Nuts and raisins are good snacks to take to the golf course for that easy energy boost before and during a round of golf. Better for you and more effective than the highs and lows of sugary chocolate bars.

Thom, I eat lots of almonds. I certainly don't limit myself to 8 and will testify that I don't have any weight problems. I was taught to soak them overnight to release a certain enzyme (now I have no clue if this is true) and then I put them on a baking sheet in a slower oven and dry them out again. The almonds swell up and then go crunchy and crisp. I don't like soggy almonds anymore. For variety I occasionally add some tamari (like a soy sauce) and roll them in that in the oven although I do like them plain better. I always eat my almonds with cheese (usually my preference is brie) and was told the nuts won't be fattening if eaten with cheese (once again I don't know if this is true!). I also love this decadent snack with sliced strawberries or (when they're out of season) fresh dates. My daughter prepared me a coffee once and took the time to slit the date and stuff it with brie cheese and almonds. It could have come out of a gourmet restaurant! Anyway, that's just my thing. I eat this most days with my afternoon coffee or even as a late lunch and it's very filling!

Replacing sugar and junk food with healthy snacks is a good idea. A sugar addiction isn't that hard to break. It goes away if you stop eating sugar for a couple weeks. Fruit is sugar too, but it's better for you. Nuts are a great snack.

Hi Joan. Yes the first few weeks can be tough. However I don't think it is hard to break either. It is just about commitment and keep the benefits on replay in your mind :D
