How Do You Prevent Alzheimers Disease?

“Okay, I forgot what I was going to write about! What day is it? What am I doing here? Who are you and why am I talking to you?” This type of conversation is what Alzheimers disease like. It’s a progressive and degenerative disease that attacks the brain and shows up in ways like distorted communication, disorientation, poor judgement, and a lot in poor memory function. If you have ever been around someone with the disease it is very heart breaking and difficult to watch! My Mother-in-Law died of the disease and upon her death she did not know who we were. So, how do you prevent Alzheimers disease?

This all comes right back to lifestyle choices. Some of it is because of a lack of knowledge in using things in our daily lives that turned out to actually be bad for us. Most folks who have the disease, estimated at over five million Americans, are over the age of sixty five, but there are cases in increasing numbers of folks younger than that.

Years ago I started researching this disease because I wanted to know how to prevent Alzheimers disease in both Hilga and I. Watching someone die from it is reason enough to find ways to avoid it. One thing I discovered was a link between aluminum usage and declining brain function. Aluminum sulfate is found in baking powder, aluminum is in under arm deodorant, in the boomer generation cooking in aluminum pans became popular. These are just a few examples, but small traces of aluminum in the brain have been linked to this disease.

The number one thing you can do to prevent Alzheimers disease is to stop using products that contain aluminum, and certainly don’t cook in them. Another good thing to do is to be sure and get your omega-3 fatty acids daily. Whether they are from Alaskan salmon, walnuts, or a supplement, this is a great way to keep brain function strong and support memory. By the way, have you ever noticed how a walnut, once out of it’s shell, looks like the brain? How about a carrot? Slice it and it looks like the eye? Aren’t carrots good for your eyes? Hmmm. . . . .

Another thing you can do to prevent Alzheimers disease it to keep physically active. Even fifteen minutes of exercise three times a week is enough to cut the risk of the disease by thirty to forty five percent in adults over sixty five. Another way is to stay mentally active. Active minds, ones that are used, tend to have a better chance of fighting off Alzheimers. An engaged brain, and also a socially active one, will lead to higher brain function throughout life.

And of course, there is always the healthy eating habits. Garbage in, garbage out, as my Mom always says. Fruits, vegetables, b-vitamins, natural fats, healthy proteins, all these things help to keep the whole body disease free.

Avoid artificial sweeteners, processed foods with all their preservatives, pesticides, and heavy metals. All these things create the formation of brain plaque, if you will, and over time cloud memory and overall brain function.

Ya, Franz likes to write about these things so you will be aware of the importance of choosing carefully what you choose to eat. It makes a difference both in the long and short term. Short term can be poor health and weight problems, and long term can be terminal diseases. So, eaters beware!
