Everyone, whether he is a student or an employee, has times when he must perform under pressure. During these times, he is nervous, because a great deal is at stake. He knows that he cannot fail.

Students, for example, must get good grades. If they succeed, they are rewarded by being allowed to stay in school, stay on the team, or keep their scholarships. If they fail, they may lose their scholarships, get kicked off the team, and possibly even get expelled from school.

Students can succeed by preparing. For example, they can study for their tests. They can make up mnemonic devices, such as words or phrases, to help them remember items such as dates or lists. If a student has to give a speech in speech class, he can make up note cards containing the important points of his speech. He can then practice his speech in front of friends or roommates. These people will be able to give him some tips on how to improve his performance, such as slowing down, speaking clearly, making eye contact with his audience, and remembering to breathe. With his friends' help, he should be more prepared and less nervous. He will then be more lilkely to get a good grade on his speech. Students are not the only ones who must perform under pressure, of course. Employees also work under pressure.

In the workplace, supervisors observe their employees. The supervisors watch to see how their workers do their jobs and how they relate to their coworkers. If the workers work well both independently and with others, the workers' evaluations should go well, and they should be able to relax and not have to worry about their jobs.

On the other hand, if workers need a great deal of help to do their jobs and do not work well with their coworkers, they may be in danger of being replaced.

In most cases, however, a person can survive an evaluation if he smiles, keeps calm, and performs his job as he normally would. By keeping calm and behaving as if evaluation day is a normal day, he may be able to trick his body into behaving as if it is a normal day at work.

If students and employees behave as they normally do, they may not experience the sweating palms and racing heart that are so common when one is under stress. They will therefore be more likely to experience success.
