How To Lessen Stress

Let's face it, we all have stress. We wake up in the morning and no matter what our day plans our, there is stress involved. Stress can be physical and it can be emotional. It is how we handle the stress that defines who we are and what coping skills we have. Some people don't have any coping skills and some have marvelous coping skills. The key here is how to lessen stress.

Physical stress is anything that makes our body feel tired, rundown, or ill. Physical stress can be exercising, working, gardening, and even chasing after little kid-lets. When we use our bodies and accomplish something we see as worthwhile, we don't see that activity as stress. When we feel good after a workout or gardening, we don't see that activity as stress. It is stress though. We feel the stress when we do not really want to perform whatever activity we need to perform. We may feel the fatigue in our muscles more, or it may be emotional.

Emotional stress is anything that causes us bad feelings. Going to a job we don't like, fighting traffic on the road to get to and from work, time constraints, appointments, hassling with children, and everything else that doesn't go the way we want it to be causes emotional stress. Watching a television show emphatically can even cause stress. The problem arises with how to lessen stress.

Physical activity is one method in how to lessen stress. Both men and women can benefit from physical activity to increase the endorphins, or good mood chemicals in our body. Men lean more toward work outs or household honey-do tasks when the wife is not nagging them. If they are being nagged, they probably will go to the gym or engage in some other type of activity away from the home. Women lean more towards walks, household chores, cleaning or other activities that result in energy being used. The ideas is to lessen stress with physical exertion, thereby increasing the good mood chemicals and making us feel better.

A hobby is another method in how to lessen stress. Working in a hobby helps in a few ways. A hobby takes our mind off of our immediate stress and can give us time to think. It removes us from the situation and engages us in a task that produces a product that we like. This all can increase the endorphins and improve our mood. When we are in a good mood, life is less stressful.

Relaxation techniques are methods in how to lessen stress. When we feel the stress level rising, we can recognize whatever physical signs we have that unwanted stress is occurring. Once we feel the signs, we can use methods to calm ourselves. We can daydream of a beautiful scene we would desire or have visited before. We can count to ten or a hundred and concentrate on breathing slowly. We can get up and get a drink of water or non-caffeinated drink. We can get up and walk around outside a bit. When we return to our workplace, desk, or whatever the stressful area is, we will have a bit of a different mood than before.

Music and radio listening is another method in how to lessen stress. If you are working and it is okay, plug one earphone in and listen to your iPod, radio, or other listening device. Have one ear open so that you can hear the phone or interact with fellow employees as necessary. Listening to music or even talk radio helps remove you from the stress by distracting you from your emotions and helping increase the endorphins in your body, therefore making you feel happier and more stress free.

Stress is all over and anything and everything can create stress in our lives. It is how we handle the stress that defines who we are and how we cope. We need to learn how to lessen stress in our lives so that we can feel better and become better people. Try the methods above and you will be more stress free and much happier.
