Whether you're pulling an all night study session, driving across country, or you simply have to work the night shift it can be a struggle to stay awake. Here are my best tips on how to stay awake all night.
Drink Lots of Water
Typically, the first thing you think of is to drink coffee, soda, tea, or energy drinks. These methods do work, but a lot of times you crash after a couple of hours and it becomes even more difficult to stay awake. Also, over time those drinks might lose their effectiveness.
I suggest drinking lots of water for one reason: it will make you go to the bathroom. Having to go to the bathroom is something that is hard to ignore. It's one of the few things that drag me out of bed in the middle of the night, and I absolutely hate getting out of bed. You'll be hard pressed to fall asleep when you have use the restroom really badly. If you do fall asleep you most likely wake up shortly to use the restroom(providing that you are drinking lots of water).
Physical Activity
It's hard to stay awake if you are just sitting in one spot not really moving. It automatically kind of relaxes you. What I suggest to you is to do some push ups and sit ups. You can even do some jumping jacks or do some sprints outside if you want. This gets your blood moving and will help you to stay awake. Now obviously, if you are driving a vehicle you can't do them in your car. I also don't suggest doing it on the shoulder of a freeway. Find somewhere safe to do them.
Good Nights Sleep
If you know you're going to be staying up all night, then you will want to plan ahead and get a good nights sleep the night before. This will give you more energy to start with since your body will be better rested. If you have more energy to start with you will be able to stay awake longer.
Cat Naps
You might think this is cheating because technically you're not staying awake "all night". I would suggest you give it a try. A twenty minute nap can be a really powerful thing. Your body will have a chance to recuperate for a little bit. After your nap, your productivity levels will increase since you will have more energy. Just don't go over twenty minutes otherwise you might wake up super tired.
Those are my top tips on how to stay awake all night. Try them out and let me know how they work for you.
