In what way is dark chocolate good for you?

There is something really seductive about chocolate. It is the most popular herb in the world and for good reason. I turn to chocolate when I want to treat myself, and when I need some comfort. I once confided in a close friend and mentor that I was eating a lot of chocolate. I was waiting for her to scold me, but instead she commented that I probably needed it as I was going through a rough part of my life. I will share with you why chocolate makes us feel good as well as other benefits of chocolate.

Is dark chocolate good for you? Here is some facts!

The Good

Remember, to get the health benefits of dark chocolate you need to choose a brand that has at least 70% cocoa content.

  • Chocolate increases serotonin in the brain which improves our mood and helps us sleep.
  • It has anti-oxidants which is good for heart health
  • It has important minerals in it such as magnesium, iron and copper.
  • Dark chocolate is an aphrodisiac

The Bad.

  • Chocolate is addictive 
  • It contains sugar
  • Chocolate contain a natural pesticide that is dangerous to pets.
  • It has a high calorie content

How to truly make dark chocolate a health food

So is dark chocolate good for you? Yes and no. It does contain a lot of health benefits, but especially the sugar can make it a burden on the body. The solution is to make or seek out chocolate with natural sweeteners. I sometimes make chocolate with sucanat. You can also use honey or stevia. Even better, you can also find chocolate that is organic, raw and infused with herbs!

Believe it or not but chocolate can become a real immune booster when combined with herbs. You can use pretty much any edible herb you want. How about chocolate with cinnamon and nutmeg, rose or echinacea? Personally I would love to make something like that at home, but there are also beautiful stores online that sell chocolate like that.

Dark chocolate can be good for you in moderation, and if you eat chocolate that has at least 70% cocoa in it. The health benefits are in the cocoa. Dark chocolate becomes a true health food with the use of less processed sweeteners and if also combined with herbs.
