Medicinal Value Of Garlic

The historical therapeutic benefits from using garlic are widely recognized by many, and in truth this herb is one of the world's oldest known remedies for various ailments. The medicinal value of garlic has been well documented throughout history. Chinese and Egyptian healers have used this root plant for over 5,000 years and it was in fact revered by the ancient Egyptians. At one point in history garlic was considered to be sacred and placed in the tombs of Pharaohs.

This herb of all herbs has quite a colorful history. In the world of folk magic the overall influence of the garlic lies in its capacity to defend - from disease and from injury. History has shown us that every society has their own legend about garlic, each unique to their culture. In any case, one concept that we all must believe is that garlic wards off evil.

Besides the medicinal value of garlic, it was also employed as a means for strength and endurance. Ancient Roman and Greek athletes took garlic prior to participating in sporting events whereas soldiers would partake before entering into battle. The "Father of Medicine", Hippocrates, incorporated the use of garlic to heal cancerous tumors, and Louis Pasteur in 1858 verified that garlic has antiseptic properties.

Modern day scientists began to examine this aromatic plant and to determine the actual medicinal value of garlic. It has been established that garlic has a strong effectiveness to fight bacteria, cancer and a range of heart diseases.

Consuming garlic on a daily basis can prevent and possibly help to cure many health problems. Scientific evidence leading towards the antitumor properties of garlic have been endorsed by the American Cancer Institute. Their studies have shown that these properties have the ability to reduce the formation of cancerous cells and slow the growth of tumor cells.

So - what is in this herb that makes it undeniably a must to include in your diet? It is known as allicin, and is released when the cloves are compressed, sliced or otherwise condensed. Allicin is a sulphur bearing compound and also gives garlic the bitter flavor and pungent scent.

Allicin is the major biologically active compound of garlic. It is the key ingredient responsible for the broad spectrum of antibacterial activity in the herb and was first reported in 1944 by scientists C.J. Cavallito and J.H. Bailey. Research has shown that allicin is the trigger for the medicinal value of garlic.

The benefits of allicin are numerous, from supporting the cardiovascular system to preventing cancer. There have been countless clinical studies to support the findings that allicin has the ability to lower total cholesterol, LDL, or "bad cholesterol" and triglycerides, and in addition increase HDL, or "good cholesterol". Allicin supports healthy circulation and in turn promotes the lowering of the risk of heart attacks and strokes.

The medicinal value of garlic is undeniable. If you are already a fan of garlic, awesome! If not, certainly make it so because it is a must for a healthy diet.

Don't like the pungent scent that is emitted by this aromatic herb? Not a problem - many people choose a garlic supplement. Besides the advantage of not having "garlic breath", most supplements are "enteric coated". This special coating of the capsule allows the capsule to reach your small intestine before releasing the allicin into your system.

Garlic consumed on a consistent basis will contribute to a longer and healthier lifestyle thus confirming the theory that the medicinal value of garlic will truly change your life.
