My walk normally starts about 6:00pm, with friends, Bob, Osborne, Arthur and the general. We would park at the cable beach police station, and travel east along the new cable beach highway.
The desire to exercise by way of walking has provided a wide degree of pleasure and benefits. In the past, I spent many years working out with weights, but weight training requires a lot of concentration, and a process of breaking and restoration of muscle fibers is always taking place in the body.
But walking for me is special, it allows me to reap benefits without the intensity lifting heavy weights. It's safer and offers changing scenic view every hundred yards, with perfume from plants, during my walk, these benefits are unequaled in any gym.
Listening to the birds as they call, and watching the butterflies with diverse combination of colours, as they fly from plant to plant, extracting nectar and pollinating plants, is a process worth watching over again.
As we travel east along the new highway, we are mesmerize by manicure lawns with pink coloured side walks, with images of palm leaves, native fauna, displayed on the walk way.
Large coconut, palm and exotic trees, with flowers in full bloom, are planted in a straight line, with benches and marquees, built as resting spots, or for inclement weather or protection from the sun, provides a human element to the walk.
As we walk, we talk about politics and many issues affecting our country and countries around the world. This aspect of our walk, I enjoy a lot, because it is educational, I could never do this in a gym. I don't have to concentrate, it's safe, and there is less chances of injury, and the health benefits are awesome.
As I glance to the right, there is a pond, with coot, blue heron, white crane, and ducks, swimming and diving as water fowl play and search their environment for food.
We have arrived at our second round about which is landscaped, displaying beautiful croton, frangipani bougainvillea, and yellow elder of every hue and tone, and lush green native vegetation.
On the right there is a chain link fence covered with a tarp, blocking the view of pedestrians, but through the cracks, you can hear and see the rumbling of tractors, and other road building equipments.
The building of a new highway, which will intercept john f. kennedy drive to the new cable beach strip, is under construction.
As we walked further, we encounter, parents with their children, friends jogging, mothers pushing their babies in cribs, dog lovers and their dogs, all trying to capture the benefits of staying fit.
