Binge drinking is generally heavy drinking over a long period of time. It is more like misuse of alcohol and with it comes a lot of physical, emotional, financial as well as psychological problems. It is not only harmful to an individual but also affects the community at large. For instance, people who drive under the influence of alcohol end up causing accidents on the road which lead to lose of lives. In many countries, the number of alcohol related road accidents has been on the rise; many governments have openly condemned alcohol abuse.
Alcohol has a lot of serious and life threatening effects which can range from long term to short term effects. Immediately after consuming high levels of alcohol, you will experience memory loss, nausea as well as blurred vision. Binge drinking can lead to permanent brain damage in the long run. Brain damage can be in form of permanent memory loss or depression. Brain damage is common especially in young people because their brains are still developing.
Cancer of the mouth is a fatal disease that can be caused by binge drinking. Liver cirrhosis and kidney failure mostly affects people that drink regularly for a long period of time. Binge drinking weakens muscles in the heart, leading to complications such as high blood pressure, heart failure or stroke. Women are more susceptible to liver complications as well as stomach ulcers caused by excessive drinking.
People who drink a lot are most likely possible to get lung infections; they are at risk of getting pneumonia and tuberculosis. Excessive drinking leads to inflammation of the pancreas which is very fatal. Impotence is a common occurrence in men who drink excessively. For women, infertility can be the end result. Women who cannot stay away from alcohol during pregnancy expose their unborn children to brain damage among many other forms of body disorders. Alcohol can easily lead to transmission of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) due to poor judgment while under its influence.
If you are a regular drinker, it is advisable for you to see a doctor as soon as possible in case you experience any discomforts in any body parts. With an MRI scan or an ultrasound scan, any developing diseases in your body will be diagnosed early enough for you to get the right treatment. Admitting you have a problem is the first step on the road to recovery. The sooner you realise this the better.
