You've been recently been diagnosed with IBS, after undergoing what seemed like every test know to man kind, so now what do you do? Your doctor tells you that he hates giving you your diagnosis, because he is as mystified as you as what he can do to help you. If you're anything like me you have read anything you can find on IBS, and even tried some of the suggestions given, and nothing has helped. You're at the of your rope and wish you could have a normal life again. This is where support groups come in.

Support groups give you a place to find out about different treatments, and where to find them. Since IBS is not a one cure fixes all ailment, this is a great place to find out what the different options are, and where to find them. You'll hear about treatments you never would have considered on your own. Acupuncture, meditation, specialized diets, herbal remedies, and much, much more are out there waiting for you to try. Why didn't your doctor recommend any of them to you in the first place? Many of the cures for IBS are considered alternative treatments so he probably doesn't know much about them.

IBS can also be a very isolating syndrome. You become afraid to go to social functions, because most social functions seem to revolve around food. Food is a trigger for symptoms to flair out of control. You may find yourself doubled over in pain, bloated like a balloon, or running to the bathroom every 5 minutes. Certainly not a fun way to spend time with family and friends! So you find excuses not to go out, and depression or anxiety sets in, because you feel completely alone. When you join a support group you will discover that there are many people out there, suffering just like you. They will each have a story to tell of what has happened to them in a social setting, and how they handled themselves. You now longer feel completely alone, and some of there suggestions may actually be helpful.

Support groups give you an outlet. You're family and friends are probably tired of hearing about you talk about your stomach issues. They don't understand the pain and frustration you are going through, and may tell you to just live with it, stop talking about it. A support group is there for you to tell your stories . No one is going to be upset if you talk about your ongoing struggles, and they're thrilled when you have found something that actually works. If you just need someone to talk to, they are there to lend an open ear, or a shoulder to cry on.

Support groups are essential for people with IBS. They work as treatment centres, stop the feeling of isolation, and give you a outlet for your frustrations and triumphs. If you are suffering from IBS, and don't know where to turn, please join a support group, such as IBS is a pain in the gut, a support group and a guide for living with IBS. Go find the help you need, and get your life back.
