The Right Way to Do Cardio

Cardiovascular training can be a difficult concept for a lot of us to wrap our heads around. Sure, it seems simple on the surface, but so does major bypass operation. Do you really know what is going on inside of your body when you go out for a run? What process is occurring to cause you to build up stamina and/or speed with every workout? The right way to do cardio takes all the dirty, gritty science and turns it into a clean and streamlined plan of action! After all, it is so much easier mentally to do something when it is simple.

There are three major things to consider when it comes to cardio; aerobic cardio, anaerobic cardio, and muscle quality.

Normal, aerobic cardio is the simple burning of calories using oxygen. It is the system that your body relies on the most in both everyday activities and cardio training. There are many ways to improve upon your normal cardio; increasing red blood cell count, improving blood flow, and increasing your lung capacity are a good start. While you can not improve any of these too dramatically, the combination can make a major change.

Anaerobic cardio is when you go past your normal limits and your body starts relying on the back up system. This is called the ATP system and provides a huge amount of energy. The problem is that it can run out very quickly (within seconds) and can take as much as a day to fully recover. Nevertheless, training this system will make everything that you do physically seem just a little bit easier.

Without getting too technical, there are two types of muscle. Slow twitch is not very powerful but has incredible endurance. It identifies best with your aerobic cardio and has very good bloodflow to it. Fast twitch is incredibly powerful but has little stamina. Think of a cheetah. Naturally, fast twitch relies heavily on anaerobic cardio. You can train both but can only manage to be a jack of all trades but a master of none.

With all of this in mind, the best cardio is HIIT because it trains every aspect of your cardio. It does prefer fast twitch over slow but that is because training your fast twitch muscle fibers provides the most overall benefit. So, whether you want to prepare for some major competition or you just want to lost fat and get a set of six pack abs, high intensity training is the way to go!

That's what I try to do. I get so impatient but I am learning not to do that the hard way....

The worst thing you can do is try to take on too much at once. Everytime you`re feeling bold, take on just a little more. That way you won`t find yourself relapsing from too much to fast.

Great advice, will keep you posted because I am back on my workouts. I dropped 30lbs and lost to much, so Dr. told me to gain 10 back which I did but then I gained an additional 10 so now I am trying to lose that....so it is the maintaining which gets hard for me when I start taking on to much like you just said.
