What Do Carbohydrates Do for the Body?

Learn to master Carbohydrates and you might find the missing keys to getting a healthy and lean body. This subject is huge, so I have divided it into smaller blocks of content.

First of all carbohydrates are sugar compounds that are made in plants by the light of the sun. We humans are awesome at extracting materials from the plants. Products like sugar are extracted from different plants and flour comes of grain, which again comes in many different types. However they are not all healthy even though extracted from plants. The two mentioned products, sugar and flour are what I like to call fast carbohydrates. This is where it gets interesting.

Fast carbohydrates

Products like sugar, white bread and pastas made from wheat flour have these fast carbohydrates. They are absorbed by the body within 30 minutes from eating it and while the body can hold around 400grams or 14 ounces of glycogen in your liver, blood and muscle cells, the rest will get transformed to fat and that might be one of your problems to losing weight.

Slow carbohydrates

Slow Carbohydrate comes of full grain or all grain products like full grain wheat, brown rice and oats. These carbohydrates are absorbed slowly by the body and will help your metabolism stay busy. Another benefit of full grain is the fiber contents. Fibers are basically carbohydrates that the body can’t digest. There are many different types of fibers which I will not get into details with. Instead I will focus on what fibers are actually good for.

There is a list of what is heralded about fibers however all build on testing which means that we have no real facts. We have done many tests, and the testing has been made on a lot of people and has showed to lower the risk of diseases like heart disease, type-2 diabetes and diverticular disease. Also colon cancer is something that it is known to prevent.

General facts about carbohydrates

Now we know about fast and slow carbohydrates which is important to understand what we are actually eating. However do carbohydrates have other benefits?

Besides holding a lot of nutrition’s that will help our digestion and keep our metabolism busy, it assist your body in absorbing calcium and may also lower your cholesterol level in your blood. It also helps your body in the regulating of sugar in your blood. This is to make sure that your blood gets the energy it needs. Bodybuilders combine carbohydrates and protein in their shakes after their workout. They do this to make sure their energy level raises fast after burning it all off, and protein to help the body rebuild the muscles.

Thank you Georgia. Yes Carbohydrate can be a wild world. I once did a zero carbohydrate diet and was surprised that I was actually allowed to eat bacon and big nice steaks lol. It can really be a jungle to figure these things out, but sticking to full grain, and eating moderate is the key I think. I'm glad you liked the article. :-)

I haven't heard them separated into 'slow' and 'fast' carbohydrates before and it makes good sense. Thanks for another interesting article.

And thank you for reading Heather. About the slow and fast carbohydrates it really makes me think about what I eat. If I'm on my way to the gym, I could go for a nice piece of white bread, because it gives me fast energy ready to get burned off short time after I eat it. If I’m hungry and going to work, then I will go for either full grain products like full grain bread with some low fat cheese on it, or a bowl of oatmeal with milk on it. Getting full grain products is easy in Denmark. We eat full grain bread made of rye and you can buy it everywhere, but in some countries it is nearly impossible to get anything else than white bread. So at least we need to tell people what is in it, so they can get other products to supplement their everyday diet. :-)

Oh I love what I call 'heavy bread'. I think it's available most places if people know to look for it. We can even buy your rye bread in our delicatessens here. I ate it first in Iceland (probably a similar thing) so I don't think many people in Australia know about it. One of my best friends in Iceland was Danish. You make me think of her now and I haven't seen her for over 20 years.... a good reason to visit your beautiful country one day I think.
