Why Become Vegan

If you find yourself asking the question "why become vegan" then you're not alone. I have encountered scores of people who ask me the very same thing. To them, and maybe even you, it just doesn't make sense and there seems to be little reason to try it. But there are many great reasons to be a vegan and I'm here to share some of them with you.

There really are two approaches to the question of "why become vegan". The two reasons produce a similar, but not identical, lifestyle among their adherents. I classify them as 'personal' and 'social'. The social reason is more commonly known as the ethical approach. It means you are motivated by a desire to protect animals, so you choose to not use meat, dairy, eggs, leather, animal-tested products, etc. It doesn't mean you do not hold the same frame of mind as the 'personal' approach, but that you take it a step farther.

So what is the personal approach to the question of why become vegan? Simply, it is a dietary or health approach. Not unlike ethical vegans, dietary vegans refrain from all animal foods (even honey) because of the health benefits. Which leads us straight to the 'veggie-meat' of the subject.

If you want to achieve optimum health, there is no better way than to kick the animal food habit. And it is a habit. Humans don't need animal foods to survive, and be strong. In fact, study after study has show that those who use none of any particular animal product fare better than their peers who did use it. So why become vegan? Here are just five of the many great reasons:

  • Lose Weight!: In the today's society it seems like just about everyone is in need of shedding a few extra pound-cakes. When you are vegan, your fat intake is reduced and your metabolism is increased. Automatic weight loss. But don't worry, you won't become thin as a rail. Your body will 'normalize' at a healthy weight leaving you looking and feeling great!
  • Reduced risk of disease: Whether it be heart disease, diabetes, cancer or high blood pressure, your chances of getting one of these conditions is greatly reduced. If you already have one of these conditions, you will see an improvement in your health, if not a total recovery!
  • Reduced medical costs: Not much needs to be said here. If you are healthy, you won't need to see medical professionals as often.
  • Eat a lot and still be fit and trim: To eat a meal of steak and steak fries, you will feel full and happy. But you'll also intake a lot of fat and maybe get a little gut ache. A vegan rarely, if ever, has this issue. And you can still savor your meals.
  • A new perspective: It's like a free trip to seeing the world differently. Here is a personal example. When my European wife says 'salad' her mind is picturing 'lettuce'. I suspect this isn't too far from how most people think of a salad. Well, let's clear up that misnomer right now. A proper salad has little lettuce but plenty of flavorful, filling and healthy foods (and not just veggies) that will not disappoint. There is nothing quite as satisfying as a huge bowl (and I mean HUGE) of salad, made with over a dozen thoughtfully selected ingredients to make a mouth water and a belly filled.

So how would you answer the question of why become vegan? I hope I have give you at least one or two good reasons, and maybe I even sparked your interest enough to find out for yourself.
