Why Not to Avoid the Sun

Now a days we constantly hear warnings about the sun's powerful and dangerous effects, and for good reason. These warnings are to be taken very seriously as some of the consequences are as fatal as skin cancer. It is absolutely true there is no alternative to good sun protection, one of the most important being an effective SPF. This article is not to discourage you from taking these precautions. It is however a reminder that the sun isn't just a bad guy to avoid. Really, we need the sunshine daily to be healthy, and I'd like to bring out some of the positive benefits it brings us.

There are actually many reasons we need daily exposure to the sun in healthy doses. The benefits we derive affect both our body and mind. The sun's powers play a huge role in the function and health of our planet, and as part of the family here on earth we will thrive from it.

We see this proves true from the endless studies and reports done in regards to mental health and depression. We see this for example, in individuals that suffer from SAD, seasonal defective disorder when exposure to certain levels of light is lower. I can myself attest to seeing this in an extreme way for the few years I lived in Alaska. I noticed in myself since I worked in doors and most days of the week during the winter I left the house before the sun fully rose and came home after it set.I definitley noticed the lack of energy, motivation, and occasional bouts of the blues. How I missed my friend the sun!

What specifically though, do we gain from the sun shining on our faces? For one is a huge dose of vitamin D.Studies show we get as much as 90 to 95% of our vitamin D intake from the sun's rays. That's no small number! Getting enough vitamin D can reduce our chance of heart disease, lower cholesterol levels, and to some extent lower blood pressure. It helps prevent the onset of diabetes up to 80% in young people, prevents MS, relieves aches and pains, and here's one I never heard of, it even helps keep our teeth strong and prevents against cavities!

Although as we mentioned earlier, over exposure to the sun increases your chance of skin cancer, getting the right amounts actually help reduce the risk to a number of other cancers. Some of these include cancers of the breast, colon, bladder, womb, oesophagus and stomach cancer.

More benefits to add to the list are in boosting fertility, easing of Irritable Bowl Syndrome in crones disease, increasing energy levels, regulating menstrual cycles, mental health and proper function, and wight loss. I think that's plenty to be thankful for.

So in defense of the sun and all the negative we hear about it, lets not go overboard in avoiding it either. Take proper precautions. Never leave the house without an SPF of 15 or higher, least on your face. Dress properly and try to avoid exposure for long periods of time when the sun's rays are strongest, between 10 am and 2 pm. It normally only takes 10-15 minutes during these hours for you body to convert the sun's rays on your skin into vitamin D. Be extra careful if you or any of your family have ever been diagnosed with skin cancer, avoid tanning beds, and above all avoid sun burn at all costs.

So even in on colder days during the winter months, get outside and get some sun! You will really benefit.
