Health Report Shows Some Bad News But Nothing Unexpected

The latest report on health concerns in the United States has been released and the information, while not shocking is not entirely positive. That report, called Health, United States, 2011, was written and released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and looked at topics ranging from obesity to smoking and compliance with health tests for all age groups. The report also showed a correlation between education level and health standards including longevity.

According to that report, more than fifty percent of all adults are not getting enough physical activity with older people the least likely to meet required minimum standards. People who were seventy five or older were the most unlikely to be getting enough activity with more than seventy percent of them get any aerobic activity or any strengthening exercises. But, younger people are not doing much better according to the report with nearly forty percent of young adults, eighteen to twenty four not exercising enough to meet minimum standards.

On the positive side, more people are getting the recommended health tests including mammograms and colorectal tests. People who are fifty to seventy five have increased their compliance with those recommendations by 25% in the last decade. Older women are also more compliant with their mammogram recommendations. Women in their forties have not changed, with those numbers remaining the same.

The CDC's report shows that the education and income level of the house may have a dramatic impact on certain health behaviors and conditions. People with a high school education or higher are less likely to be smokers according to the report with only 24% of people ages 25-64 with a diploma or GED smoking compared to 31% of those with less than a high school education. People who have some college education are even less likely to be smokers, with less than ten percent of people who have a bachelors degree smoking.

People who have at least a bachelors degree are also more likely to live longer than those who do not. For a man, that degree can mean around nine extra years of life for both men and women.

The report also looked at the states with the best doctor to patient ratio with Hawaii, Minnesota and the Northeastern states having the best ratios while the states in the South and the Rocky Mountain regions have the worst. The number of children who are living below the poverty level who are without health insurance also fell in the past ten years.
