Is Dr Internet Good for Your Health?

No doubt, the Internet has changed our life and how we look for information. I used to have a huge personal library and lots of reference books. I love books. I used to be a very avid reader and spend a fortune on books and scores. I still have a big professional library at home but nothing like I had before moving to Australia.

I can see the time when we won't have books just the Internet.

Since the Internet and the introduction of IPad and IPhone, I use my books less and less. When I need information, I go right away to the www.

In the good old times when you needed a check up or a diagnosis regarding your health, you would book in for an appointment with your GP. The local doctor would do the basic check up then if there was a need, send you for further tests and consulting a specialist.

Things are looking a little different nowadays. You can just jump on the web from anywhere and anytime and look up the relevant topic and self-diagnose. It is a dangerous thing to do because some of you might become fearful when the problem is just a minor condition and for others the opposite. You may dismiss a major health issue when it would be advisable to seek medical attention.

It is wise to combine the two. It is great to gain an understanding of health concerns and see what options you have and consult those with your medical practitioner. Obviously, the better informed you are when it comes to your health, the illness you are dealing with and the treatments and other options that are available, the more intelligent questions you can ask. The more you understand the answers the doctor gives you and what treatments you will get, what side effects and consequences they will have, the better it is. We are talking about your health and your life. It is your decision.

In many cases, doctors don't like well-informed patients. They cause too much trouble. They ask too many questions, want too many answers and explanations. Frequently, they look for alternative treatments away from the main stream. These patients test the doctor and challenge the traditional approach. With these patients the doctor has to be up to date with the latest medical and alternative treatments and many are too rigid in their views or occasionally, even too lazy and bored to care.

However, when you find an open minded, competent doctor who is on the ball, you found a partner to work together. Medical professionals like that almost prefer to work with well-informed patients. They like when the patient takes charge of their healing and their treatment. Patients, who take charge of their healing feel more in control. They have much better chance to restore their well-being. You need a knowledgeable, experienced and confident medical expert to achieve this. It is a team work.

There is some advanced technology that is available by doctors to consult with patients even from the other side of the world. The use of Video Conference and Video Broadcasting is widely used in many professions. So if you want to consult a specialist from another country, don't give up on the idea just because you can't fly there for a visit! Distance and finance is not such of a problem anymore.

The information explosion has produced many excellent sources on the Internet but it has some concerns as well. There is a load of poorly researched and not scientifically supported information. You really need to know the difference when it comes to serious issues not just casual reading.

Information presented from a research article, medical journal, an independent source that is reputable expert, university sites, government health websites are considered most reliable.

While people's personal experience is extremely valuable and worth listening many times, the web does not know your medical history, your family's medical history and your current circumstances. All that can be extremely relevant when seeking medical advice.

Many times the Internet will give you several possible illnesses on a symptom so it is very important to use the Internet sensibly and in consultation with a health professional.

You need to understand as I mentioned in a previous article that health is not merely the absence of illness but a holistic approach to physical, mental and emotional whole. Also, I would like to remind you that prevention is better than cure. Make changes in your lifestyle now, while it is not too late.

Please be aware of the source of information you are researching when it comes to serious issues with your health to make sure it is coming from a reputable expert and organization.

Yours in good health!

Cheers, Piroska
