How Coconut Oil Is Good For Cholesterol

Just another reason to add organic coconut oil to the diet: it's good for your cholesterol. Although I'm rather impressed about this news, I'm definitely not surprised. I've been doing so much research on all the benefits of coconut oil, this is just another one to add to the long list. I hope someday more people will learn about these benefits and start changing their lives for the better by becoming more healthy.

Our bodies need cholesterol in order to perform important functions and in maintaining good health. However, too much of the bad kind (LDL) and not enough of the good kind (HDL) can lead to heart disease and stroke. It's important to maintain and pay attention to the right cholesterol ratio, rather than the total values. Why? Because the ratio is more accurate for providing the useful information about your risk for heart disease.

If your HDL (good) numbers are high, making your total cholesterol high, isn't always a bad thing. It's more important to keep your LDL (bad) numbers down with different lifestyle changes. This is where the medium chain fatty acids (or medium chain triglycerides) come in. These can be found in organic coconut oil. It may not reduce your total cholesterol number, but it's greatest effect is on the good cholesterol (HDL).

Many vegetable oils will increase your ratio, but organic coconut oil does the opposite. It will increase the good kind, but will have no effect on the bad kind. Therefore, your cholesterol ratio will be decreased because of this. There have been population studies done in the Pacific regions where the islanders consume large amounts of organic coconut oil as part of their daily diet.

The research showed that these islanders had remarkably good cardiovascular health. Some of the other great benefits include:

  • lower body fat
  • lower tendency to form blood clots
  • lower levels of blood and liver cholesterol
  • increased metabolic rate
  • converted to ketones by the liver - for brain health

This is excellent news for people who are seeking information on how coconut oil's good for cholesterol and other things. Again, it has to do with the composition of the oil that makes it stand out from the rest. It's the medium chain fatty acids present in lauric and caprylic acid and it's high content of Vitamin E and polyphenols giving the many health benefits of coconut oil..

Of course, it's always wise to contact your doctor when deciding to change your diet. You never want to try or add something new to your treatment especially when you've been under a doctor's care for so long. I'm in my 30's and I add coconut oil to my diet as a preventive measure. I like to feel good and want to remain healthy for as long as I possible can.
