While nobody likes the way fat on their gut makes them look, the real danger is the fat IN their gut. This is referred to as visceral fat and is some NASTY stuff. It has been attributed to everything from diabetes to heart disease. The good news is that in order to lose visceral fat, you have to do all the sames things as you would to lose fat on the outside. This also means that if you are overweight, chances are you are already dealing with the negative health effects of visceral fat. So how do you lose this nasty visceral fat?
Diet and Exercise!
Duh!
Actually, there are some more specific things that you can do to target your gut fat. First of all, you should aim to reduce(but not eliminate!) your saturated fat intake. If possible, completely get rid of trans fats in your diet. This can be accomplished by completely avoiding all processed or unnaturally preserved foods. This might sound simple but it is much harder to actually do than you think!
You should start running every other day. Two or three times a week would be a good start. Aim for speed and power, not burnt calories! The real point of cardio is to improve your cardiovascular system and metabolism. It is a very common misconception that you should run to expend energy. If you wanted to move just to burn calories, go do something productive like build a deck or something!
This might sound weird, but you can burn fat by building muscle. While it is a myth that fat can turn into muscle, it is true that muscle will use fat to grow! You see, unlike fat, muscle burns energy instead of storing it. Even in a relaxed state, muscles are constantly burning calories. So you see, you will be at a great advantage in your belly fat loss if you pack on a little muscle. The bonus is that once you burn all that fat, you have a ripped body to show off!
These tips can be applied whether the fat is on the inside or the outside of your gut. You do have to eat fat in your diet. In fact, it is the best source of slow burning energy and won`t mess with your insulin resistance or metabolism. Keep your efforts strong for just a week and you will begin to see progress. Build some muscle and by the end of it, you will have your very own six pack abs!
Great information Chip. I always focused on burning calories, but I'm now going to put more emphasis on building muscles to help with my expanding waistline. Thanks a heap.
Yup! Building some muscle has far reaching benefits beyond just aesthetics. Thanks for the comment.
