Omega 6 Fatty Acids May Be Crucial In Lowering Risks Of Coronary Heart Disease

Higher levels of Omega 6 fatty acids may be associated with a lowered risk in the development of coronary heart disease according to recent research studies. Omega 3 fatty acids have already been established as beneficial to better health, with is Omega 6 counterpart often warned against. The newer studies have shown that people who have higher levels of this type of fat in their blood may also be at a significantly lowered risk of heart disease overall. Researchers at the University of Cambridge found a weak but still significant link between the higher blood levels of another kind of fatty acids and an increased risk of heart disease. Their findings were published in the journal PLoS Medicine.

The study used just over 2400 people, including slightly more than six hundred who subsequently died and compared them against nearly five thousand people who did not have any form of cardiovascular disease. At the start of the study, each patient was assessed via survey which looked at a number of key lifestyle factors including their medical history, smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity (including duration, intensity and frequency). Other topics covered by the survey included their social class and level of education. Each participant gave a blood sample at the beginning of the study and then again at the end of the study for follow up evaluation. Both samples were analyzed for the concentration of more than twenty different fatty acids.

The study did establish that there was a link between a higher concentration of Omega 6 fatty acids in the people who did not develop cardiovascular disease and a lower concentration in those who did, however this was not the case with all of the patients for either outcome. Since no direct correlation was established, the researchers caution people from thinking they can just increase their Omega 6 fatty acids and be protected. The study also established another fact that had been suspected all along: fatty acids and fats in general are handled and treated in the body differently for every body meaning that there should be some more tailor made decision about nutrition and eating habits especially in those who have certain risk factors for potentially dangerous, chronic conditions.

Food sources for the Omega 6 fatty acids include poultry, nuts, avocado and most of the vegetable oils. There are currently no recommendations for supplementation of this type of fatty acid, nor is there likely to be such an urging in the future.

I know. At one point, not very long ago, they were telling us not to eat a lot of foods with Omega 6, to stick with only the Omega 3's. They change their recommendations so much no one knows what to eat at all.
