Air Conditioner Duct Cleaning In Maryland Will Make A Huge Difference

You wouldn't believe some of the unseen things in our air conditioners that can negatively effect us. I know, because it involved my own family, and fortunately since I'm in the indoor air quality business, I knew exactly what to do.

Air conditioners are notorious for housing all sorts of bacteria, viruses and mold. If you think about it, it's the perfect incubator for those kinds of malicious things. It's a dark wet environment, due to the enclosure of the ducts and the condensation from the evaporator coil. That environment is the perfect habitat for some really nasty stuff. My family was affected by an unseen bacteria. It affected our respiratory systems and it even got onto the skin of my oldest son. Trust me... it's not fun, and I'm lucky to have caught and treated it early. I can't stress how important it is to keep the evaporator coil and condensate line clean. It's equally important to know what you're cleaning with.

I'm not a big fan of using chlorides to rid air conditioning systems of bacteria or fungi. You can get the same results with alcohol based products. The only difference between alcohol and chlorides is cosmetic, but chlorides are toxic while alcohols aren't. Unfortunately sometimes the bacteria, viruses or fungi are located so deep within the system that a professional is needed to sanitize the system. It's not like you could spray Lysol on the vents and be free and clear. The condensation happens from the temperature difference. Like I always explain..."It's like a cold glass of water on a summer day, it sweats a lot of liquid." Dark wet environments on hot summer days are perfect habitats for harmful bacteria, fungi and viruses. It's no wonder that people have severe reactions to their indoor air in the summer months. My wife and children were no exception.

Getting to the components to clean them can be difficult. Air handlers are a bit easier than furnaces but you should still treat the duct work too. Especially if you've had respiratory issues. Condensation can happen in a lot of places, not just at the evaporator coil. If metal duct work passes through an unconditioned space, like a crawlspace or garage, it can sweat. The temperature difference of metal registers can cause sweating too. There are countless places that mold, viruses and bacteria can harbor within the air ducts. The evaporator coil maybe the most obvious place but it's not the only place. When in doubt clean it out. Get rid of mold viruses and bacteria in the whole system. Clean the air conditioner and treat it with a sanitizer.
