Air Duct Cleaning Services In Kensington MD - They Go Beyond Air Ducts

Air duct cleaning companies often provide a wide range of associated services. They can range from cleaning components of your furnace/heat pump/air conditioner, to cleaning other vents. It's common for an air duct cleaning company to clean other vents in your home. One overlooked vent, that's actually a fire hazard, is the dryer vent. It makes sense for them to check all the vents in the house. After all, the right company has commercial tools designed specifically for cleaning your vents. That doesn't mean just air vents.

Some of the common components that air duct cleaners service are:

  • evaporator coils (because they get fouled with debris, hindering air flow and air quality)
  • blower motors (debris compacts the cupped shaped blades making the motor pull more electricity)
  • bathroom exhausts (birds often nest in the piping, especially on higher vents)
  • dryer vents (dryer vents clog with lint making many hazardous conditions, birds love these too)
  • sanitizing/moldicides (nasty bacteria viruses and mold can accumulate in air ducts)

Evaporator coils and blower motors are housed in the HVAC system on the supply side. Supply simply means the air has already been filtered and has been conditioned. Some people say positive side of the system. It doesn't matter. What matters is that it's past the filter. The blower motor then moves the conditioned air through the air ducts and out of the registers. If the components on the supply side are dirty, the air is contaminated with whatever particulate that is. It could be irritating allergens to carcinogenic materials. Indoor air pollution is way overlooked, and some of the airborne materials are very dangerous. Just because you can't see it, doesn't mean it isn't there.

Usually if you check your blower motor blades, you can tell if your evaporator coil needs cleaning too. I forgot to mention that you need an HVAC license to clean those components. Look for an air duct cleaning company that has an HVAC license. You'll get a more thorough job done. The blower motor blades should be cupped and free of debris. When debris compacts in that cupping, it makes it harder for the blower motor to move air. If the blades are dirty it's a good indication that debris is moving past the filtration and further into the supply. Since the evaporator coil is past the blower motor and if the blower has debris on it, it's safe to assume the evaporator coil has debris too. A dirty blower motor almost always means the coil needs cleaning too. Since both components are after filtration it's a good idea to clean them anyway.

Bathroom exhausts don't often get too dirty. Some skin cells and humidity can clog up those motors, but most of the time it's a bird problem. If birds have gotten into the vent, which is likely on vents that are second story or higher, then they nest in them. The nest is not only blocking air flow, but it's noisy and can be a habitat for bird mites. If you don't know what those nightmarish bird mites are... good. You don't want to. Think of hard to see invasive veracious parasites. When birds nest in vents, all their parasites and disease vectors nest with them. A simple bird guard is a great investment.

Dryer vents are another vent in the house that should be checked. Most dryers even have a sticker on the back that says " May cause fire and or death ". Most homeowners don't ever see the sticker. Honestly how many times have you pulled out your dryer and looked at the back of it? The sticker is a warning to use heavy gauge steel for venting. The heavy gauge steel is supposed to suppress combustion if it happens. 26 gauge steel is an excellent material for dryer vents, but I rarely see it on residential dryer vents. If you don't have a heavy gauge steel dryer vent, I'd strongly recommend you get one. Your house doesn't have to be another dryer fire statistic. Heck... give a fireman a break, they work hard enough! Please use heavy gauge steel for your dryer vent, and get it checked annually.

Sanitation and moldicides are a topic for an entire article itself, and maybe I'll write one. Remember those bird mites I was talking about... well couple those with indoor allergens, bacteria, viruses and mold. Those are just some of the nasty things that can be found in your indoor air. Sanitizers and moldicides definitely have their place in controlling indoor air pollution. When used correctly they can dramatically increase your indoor air quality. Look for companies that use sanitizers with a clean MSDS report. Some sanitizers can be extremely toxic Ask questions and be aware of what materials companies are putting into your indoor air.
